Steering Shaft Universal Joint

And now for the next challenge.

The steering shaft supplied by GBS has two Universal joints on it that are welded to the shaft, NZ regulations require that the shaft is not welded so I need to replace it. Question is where do I get them or what are they off?

The two UJ's are slightly different, Kit Spares show one end available but not the other, if I can get the UJ's I can get a new shaft made with splined ends which will satisfy the inspector.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks guys, the ones on the rally design site look very similar to the kit spares ones, still waiting for a response from GBS so if they cant be bothered I may go this route.

Thanks again

the column support bearings were plastic, that's for sure. But the UJs? New one on me.

We have 2 2B/04 (2004/05) and both of those have tube shafts with UJ's welded on to the ends. One is new ie not used the other, it is rogered used, did 20K was probably shot at 10K. both have plastic spiders.

My son said it was common knowledge.

I can produce shafts for the Rally design ends @ £20 a pop. Made to your own length. (Same price as Rally Design for their short offering).

Given your location it might be worth looking at Range-Rover components. They have a UJ with two splines and pinch bolts that might do the job (looks like the "Group 4" forged steel one from RD).

Just thinking they might be cheaper/easier/faster for you to source locally.

Angus & Alan,

Just a heads up...

If you are still using the sliding pillar set up, it uses a Metro rack & had a really bodged joint made up by RHE to connect the column to the rack....

I'm not saying Alan's won't fit, but best to make sure the splines on the column will fit the rack...it is definitely not a standard Escort or Sierra fitting.

You may need to send Alan your own column to modify.

Thanks Bob, I still have the sliding pillar set up complete with metro rack but I also have the have the original shaft off the car, which is an extremely tight fit at the rack end, tapped it off with a hammer, so I have that as a template.

Cheers

Angus
