Change Speedo Cable

How easy is it to replace the Speedo Cable whilst the gearbox is in the car. I have a Type 9 gearbox going to a Ford Escort Speedo. The problem is the speed reading just bounces around everywhere and we have replaced the speedo with a new working one

I changed mine when I changed my dash. it depends on its route. but I had to cut a hole in the tunnel from underneath to access the circlip

awkward but not impossible. cables probably routed badly and needs replacing.

if my old ones any good to you and I can find it. just cover postage its yours

very awkward i did mine while engine was out and i had to pull the gearbox out till i had enough clearance to fit the new one i would of cut a hole in the tunnel if the engine was not already out and put a plate over the hole for easy acces if needed.

I tried to change mine but the open end of the circlip was pointing down wouldn't turn so i couldn't get the pliers onto it as the cable was blocking the pliers so i choped the cable about 8" from the g/box and fitted a hall effect pick up to the end worked fine for a few months the the drive gear in the box gave up the ghost now i'm trying a magnetic pick up on the rear drive shaft

a bouncing needle is due to the routing of the cable, ie too tight a radius. It's unlikely you'll need to change it, just change the route. Mine comes out of the box, into the footwell, under a false floor, and up the bottom of the footwell.
