Some Rally teams painted the engine white for that very reason

I suspect it is an over compressed rocker cover gasket.

The spreader washers help and I did once see a complete metal collar for the rocker cover

I use Hylomar and stick the gasket to the rocker cover overnight, then repeat the process for rocker cover to block, then grey silicon on the washers with an O ring under more silicon on the bolt head and nip to recomended torque in recomended order.

Last fit is the side bolts at the cam end
