Red7's No.2 Piston

Well now I have found what the problem was with my Pinto. N0 2 piston wrecked. We have swaped engines old Cortina 2 litre out new Sierra 2 litre in. Engine runs great but cannot select gears with engine running. We used the Sierra flywheel connected to the Cortina clutch, bell housing and release arm and bearing, what did we do wrong? :boohoo:

Hi

Can not see a problem using the Sierra flywheel with the Cortina clutch both are 216mm diameter. and both clutch kit have the same AP part number I think.

Is your S7 using a Mk 4 or Mk 5 clutch pedel set up?

Thanks, I'll call the motor factors today to confirm the clutch part no's. What's the difference between the Mk 4 and 5? This one is self adjusting, the clutch arm is moving about 15mm between pedal fully depressed and released at the moment. I'll take a snap tonight and post it here. This snap is of the North East Hoodies on the job, that's a 24 year old pinto on the end of the string (the Cortina engine that came out of my Hood).

Thank's Neil it worked super. I had hoped to get it back to you tonight, but it looks like I will be needing it again next weekend. Any ideas on the clutch problem?

Had a problem on My RS2000, could change gears but it was like the cluch was not letting go. After changing back to a 4 speed still not joy i stripped it all down and found the center plate that passes drive to the input shaft had cracked and the outer parts had come off. these bits then got jammed between the cluch plate and the cluch cover plate. So new cluch fitted now OK

Steve, 15mm doesn't sound very much, is that the cable or somewhere on the lever? Looking at the picture it looks as though the pawl is about mid position but it is hard to tell is there a hole in the bulkhead to stop the quadrant hitting it when the pedal is depressed?

The 15mm is at the lever, I am dreading the worst and we have to take the engine out again (although on the good side it's running sweet) and muck about in the bell housing. Hopefully it's just an adjustment problem. Do you have the Cortina block in your S7 Peter?

I am thinking along the lines of clutch cable faults.

What if the clutch cable is stretching?

I will replace the cable tonight and see if that fixes the problem.

Anybody know how far the clutch lever moves between strokes?

Steve, just out of interest did any one have a play with the clutch lever arm when you weren't looking?

Only asking because I helped a neighbour take the engine out of a mk 1 escort and his son decided to inspect the clutch bearing and arm as we replaced the leaking core plug, but didn't tell us and he put the arm back in back to front - result - same problem as you, gear selection ok if not running, no chance if running.

Oh how we chuckled!

Luckily quick to cure as there's loads of room to swing a ford crossflow around in an escort engine bay.

Steve,

Have you tried re-setting the clutch adjustment, just use a small screwdriver to release the tooth bit and then it should readjust itself once you connect the cable up and depress the clutch??

This was what i had to do when i replaced the engine as the adjustment was miles out so i could change gear but the clutch never actually came into contact with the flywheel.

Dont worry about the engine lift, i have no need for it (yet), and i dont think it will help get the Porsche 924 from liverpool to Newcastle!!!

Neil.

Steve, I have a sierra pedal box but the movement should be the same, I have just measured the cable movement and I get about 20mm. It may be a silly question but have you tried lifting the pedal towards you just to make sure you are getting the full movement on the adjustment?

Peter
