Hi All,

So I've had a dig around and not really found the answer I'm looking for so maybe you guys will know. I've got a donor car on a 02 plate tax band k, assuming I build my kit (that I don't have yet) with the correct amount of donor parts and it gets an age related plate I assume it keeps the donors tax band correct?

If it were to be registered as Q what would happen to the tax?

Thanks

Stu

Hi Stu,

For the first point, yes, it should keep it's tax band if it keeps the 02 plate.

Q-Plate MOT, as per the MOT inspection manual section 6b:
Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to be treated as follows:
-for emission purposes only, they are to be considered as first used before 1 August 1975
-for all other testing purposes, they are to be considered as being first used on 1 January 1971
MOT inspection manual: cars and passenger vehicles - Introduction - Guidance - GOV.UK

Since the original registration details, including emissions and engine size, are often unverifiable, Q plates do not follow the standard Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) bands based on CO₂ emissions or engine displacement. Instead, they fall under the Private/Light Goods (PLG) taxation class, which applies a fixed annual tax rate.
Vehicle tax rates: Other vehicle tax rates - GOV.UK

Also, fun fact, you can use a black/silver plate on your Q-plate car as it is considered a 54-year old car!
(unfortunately, you do not get any tax or MOT exception).

Just a couple of other things to consider, as an 02 plate it will have a Cat, your kit must have a Cat, your emissions will have to be the same as your donor. You cannot transfer off a Q plate to put anything else on, it bothers some people but not others
