Which Camshaft

I was running a FR32 cam kit on a standard 2ltr carb head, which was skimmed by 50thou. had a lightened flywheel and 32/36 DGAV. The engine was very responsive, good torque through all the gears. its a good idea to have a vernier cam pulley.

I have know fitted a Vulcan 160hp engine to my car this last few weeks, its got a FR33 cam fitted to this. First impressions are very good, it idles well to, but i must say that it has a standard flywheel, recomended by vulcan. Good torque to but i have to say you do need to rev it a little more but i am restricted to 4500rpm while running in. It don't half sound good with the twin 40's. A massive improvment on the other engine.

so if anyone is interested i have a complete KR32 cam kit avaliable for a sensible price.

I have the Piper 285 (same as FR32) without the vernier pulley & a standard unleaded head through a Dgas 38. Puts out 99 at the wheels & aside from the 38's flat spot it is very driveable...

Keep an eye out for an RS2000 flywheel. They are lightened, and a straight fit.

I have always been a bit nervous with machined standard cast flywheels, make sure whoever does it knows exactly what they are doing. We had a flywheel part company on a Turbo Technics Pug. 205 1.9 gti and it was not a pretty site, it came straight through the bulkhead and bonnet.

I have a spare fr30 cam if anyone is interested in it.

It is better than standard but will not increase top end speed for this you need a least fr32 or more. A word of caution though , the high lift fr30 will increase torque but will wear the cam followers quicker (particularly if already worn).

Just to add my 2p worth.

I have a 2.0, lightened flyheel, big valve head, twin 40s and an FR32.

It ticks over at 750rpm like a Swiss watch, pulls like a train from 2500 revs, has

to be reined in at 7000, but still trickles round at 1500 rpm (33mph) in 5th. Its got all the torque you could ask for. Fitting a vernier pulley & retiming the cam on the rolling road gained another 8bhp.

If I had to do it again I could easily sacrifice a little of the torque for more go at the top end without making it a pig in traffic.

Personally I'd go for the next camshaft up the list FR33?

Cheers, Bob.

PS "DO-I" have you only just changed your camshaft?

I remember speaking to you about it on the ferry back from LeMans!!!

PPS the veiled warning on the PUMA website refers to Specialised Engines in Essex..maybe another company to add to the list....?

PPPS Ive had a lot of dealing with Rally Design....theyre always my first port of call, knowledgeable guys, loads of stock & competitive prices.

Ok so I have just read the Puma article, and that looks like the way to go for me.

FR30, 38DGAS, the rest standard, plus the ports which I polished smooth.

Bob, your set up sounds exciting but I will save that for a rebuild when I want even more. Right now I need to cap the cost.

Madmax...... where do you live.? Send me a PM about your FR30.

Chris n......got all your mails, and welcome to the Thames Valley clan, see you soon we hope.
