    Engine Ecus

Starting my first build soon with a Zetec engine. GBS only seem to offer an Emerald ECU for £700 . The Megajolt seems much cheaper - is it any good? Is there any other make i should consider? Thanks.

    Fuel System

I should just have you 2 on speed dial Got the list, Richard, which is why i was confused - it has an LP pump, filters but the 'fuel kit' doesn't. I think I'll do what turnipfarmer says - don't suppose either of you can confirm if the eBay swirl pot will fit the GBS? There's also a 1.5L version which is 200mm high - is that better? Thanks guys...

    Fuel System

First build of my GBS Zero and lots of questions. .. GBS have sent me a quote of £400 for a 'fuel system kit'. On questioning them, this includes the following : Pump & filter mounting Kit Fuel injection Pump Fuel Pressure Regulator Swirl pot and mounting bracket Pipes and various brackets. Now, I could be wrong but this doesn't seem to be a full kit IMO. Don't I need another pump and a filter? Do I need the swirl pot or is there a cheaper alternative? TIA.
  4. Thanks Richard - i may take you up on that... :good:

    Engines 101

I know i worked out a budget before i started which must have included these bits but it's a bit shocking when a box of electronics costs almost as much as an engine! Thanks for all the replies :-)
  6. Went for this - low profile and a little more expensive but better reviews: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00521RGXG/ref=s9_simh_gw_p263_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=14YX60WH0T84S6RVZE2Q&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294

    Engines 101

Some very basic questions - I'm about to start my first build and I'm confused about what i get with an engine. I plan on using a basic 2.0 L Zetec - nothing fancy. I see lots of blogs and posts about aftermarket throttle bodies, ECUs etc. When i look at places selling engines, none seem to explain exactly what you get for your money - would i expect an engine to have an ECU of some sort? Manifolds? Alternator? Pumps? Flux capacitor? What should I expect to have to buy extra? Sorry for stupid questions....
  9. Thanks for all the replies - I'll check the other companies
  10. Gawd, so much to learn...sump next - has anyone simply raised the engine, rather than fitting (or hacking) a lower sump? I guess you'd need a bonnet hump (although i like them) or are there more fundamental issues with doing that (maybe prop shaft angle?)? Prompted by the cost of the Raceline sump...

    New Zetec Engine

Who would have guessed it - a salesman being economical with the truth

    New Zetec Engine

I specifically asked that at Stoneleigh and both the GBS and TIger sales guy insisted they were 'brand new' and had not been sitting around for years. I know i could buy an old one and it will probably be fine but knowing my luck it will be a crock of s**t and I'll end up paying more to get the darn thing fixed. Even if it's been sitting for 10 years, zero miles is a lot less stress than 70k, even if driven by a granny.

See, why didn't that come up when i did my search?! Many thanks...

    New Zetec Engine

Soon to start a new build and i really want a nice, new 2.0 Zetec. GBS will sell me one for about £900 but i can't find anyone else selling them, to compare costs. Anyone suggest an alternative or is £900 ok?
  15. I think you're right and i have the feeling i have been a tad mislead by the sales guy but my own fault for not clarifying. Ah well, it's only the kids inheritance
  16. (Should i be starting new threads in the relevant subforum?) Called the place in Sevenoaks to ask about diffs and they replied in fluent 'technical' (i always feel like a pleb when talking to mechanics). They basically offered to effectively build me an almost new diff with any spec i wanted but said i need to tell them certain things. First off, are the drive shafts bolt or push-fit? Research says bolt are stronger in the long term but push fit should be fine - are both options easily available and cost the same? Any preference? (I might try refurb these myself - found a guide which looks pretty easy). Presumably, i just want a standard 3.92 diff? Lower ratio better for cruising, i believe, but you lose acceleration, which i don't want. The mechanic-alien asked me what size tyres/wheels I'd have - i have no clue right now but i assume that just helps determine what diff ratio to use. If i just want a 3.92, wheel size is irrelevant, no? He also asked if i wanted 7" or 7.5". I have no idea what this measurement is of and why its important but i assume i just want a 7" (most on sale seem to be that size)? Sorry for lots of questions...hope you can help.
  17. Don't be so upset - it's not your cash I was hoping to only spend £12 - £13k but my own desire to not do any refurb work myself means I'll probably have to spend more. GBS suggested £13k for a ' basic' Zero and i assume that means a refurbed gearbox from them, which is £800. So, if i get one for £575, i am 'doing a budget build'. Happier now?
  18. Thanks, I'll definitely use them considering GBS want £800 for the gearbox. Also much closer to me...
  19. By the way, I'm famous! I'm in the picture of the GBS stand at Stoneleigh, on the blog on the GBS website (large, greying bloke in the blue t-shirt). I'll be signing autographs at a Waterstones near you soon...
  20. Hmmm, i have no idea what a 'new' gearbox should look like but that wouldn't match my expectation ...
  21. Nice one - thanks for that Although those prices don't include VAT - the eventual price isn't much less than GBS, which is actually a good sign as I'll probably end up getting everything from them anyway (I'm very lazy that way).
  22. I searched and only found GBS and Tiger - could you post an example you found? However, had a thought, do GBS alter the diff to fit the chassis mounting points? So buying from elsewhere may be tricky, no?
  23. Who wouldn't ? The problem is that i don't have the tools and knowledge to strip a diff, for example, and replace seals/bearings or whatever is in there. I guess i knew that was going to be the answer - will just have to bend over and take it like a man If any of you ever meet my wife, the car cost £12k, ok?

    Rivet Gun

Thanks all - is there any particular brand that's better/worse? There are rivet guns on ebay for less than a fiver - I assume they're to be avoided?
