  1. OK, what is the best way to have a roof?

Is it to build one from scratch or buy one.

First option is preferable as I have plenty of bamboo and newspaper but the 2nd one may necessitate waiting until finances change. And waiting, and waiting, and waiting......

Don't suppose anyone's got an old set that need a bit of refurbishment?

  2. They could be but they are then at the wrong angle to come up the side of the seats and may well be in the way of the seat mounts. But whatever way you fit them as Ian says unless the fixing can be removed by one person i.e. can easily reach both the nut and bolt at the same time then the nut has to be welded in place.

Ahhhhh, I see what you're saying.

So, a bit of leftover angle iron from the seat mountings under the car bolted on with a couple of solid bolts and fix the harness to it.

    Sorted.

    :D

  3. Well, I was fortunate that the "Gentleman" who attempted my Lego kit before I took it over forgot to put the tadpole rubber between the arch and body.

Consequently, after drilling out the rivets (and finding the light wires were just twisted together) I took the whole arch and plonked it in a boiling hot bath with loads of washing up liquid.

It certainly helped get the plastic and residude off but there was still a lot of staining which I used Brasso on. (not posh enough to own Silver Polish ;) )

Anyway, all in all, it took me about 4 hours for the 1st arch and am doing the second one today so it should be a bit quicker now I know what I'm doing.

Wish I had read this thread yesterday :)

  4. He's definatly in the McLaren back yard. In fact, on the last photo, he's about 1 mile up the road from their old HQ.

With the trade plate and the camo / disguise job, it's obviously not a Chav-U-like job.

Odds are it's some sort of McLaren prototype but it's bloody short.

If you take those false fins off the roof and back, it looks very much like a lotus?

  5. Can't explain your specific problem but disc wear these days is quite common due to the change from asbestos pads to modern materials. They tend to be much harder on the discs. Go back 20 years and you hardly ever bought new discs, just new pads. These days you buy new discs virtualy every time you buy pads. Similar story with clutches. The harder material has trouble bedding in on a worn surface.

    Nigel

    That rings a bell.

I bought a Freelander new a few years ago (why, oh why, oh why) and it consumed some front pads at a rate of 25,000 miles.

However, at 50k, they changed the disks as well.

Now hang on a minute I said. I'm happy with 25k for the pads but 50k for the sodding disks is a bit rich?

Well, the same happened at 100. I decided to keep the disks and there was only about 1.5mm of wear on them and these are quite thick disks.

From now on, if you can bend them, they need changing :D

  6. I think I have secured a 2b DVD from David.

With a bit of luck, I can copy it to my HD and burn a fresh copy to my DVDr if anyone needs another copy.

    Thanks everyone.

  7. Hi Chaps

Didn't know where best to put this so please move it Mods if it's not in the correct area.

Has anyone transferred the Build Sequence video onto DVD. In particular, I would like a 2b Pillar although anything would be useful.

    Regards

  8. Please help,

I was talking to a fellow kit car owner and as we both have the problem of driving over 7 in the middle of the road speed humps to get on the decent road, we both have to go over with half the car on the hump and the other off (I am shore you have all done this) he was saying that he had heard about dry sumps that do not stick out the bottom of teh car so much.

Is somone pulling our legs or is there such a thing and has anyone got one or used them in the past.

    Cheers

    Andrew M

    Andrew

All has been said before me but can I just confirm that Bills work is spot on. Go with that option.

  9. cheers, i recommended it to a friend, because i think its a good deal. but i dont no much about leightweights

i dont want to give him a bum stear, ?

I think there are a few structural modifications needed to get the Lightweight through SVA. As I understand it, only 1 has so far passed but if your friend is good mechanically, these things could be overcome.

I'm pretty new to all this so wouldn't even dream of starting a project like this although the Lightweight looks an excellent car.

Bit of a case of suck-it and see.

  10. Sorry Knock-on but the bad feeling you have displayed in this thread (and previously I believe) just comes across as sour grapes to me.

Your inferences against the integrity of the modern police service are somewhat offensive, and I can assure you that police officers are not treated ANY differently, in fact as has been seen recently they are subject to a more intense scrutiny than other motorists. We are allowed an exemption from some elements of Road Traffic enforcement, such as speeding and red lights ..... that goes without saying.

Another police officer not exactly getting away with it

I have to handle all the Notices of Intended Prosecution which arise from Police Officers from my Division exceeding the speed limit. I'm not going to post statistics on here, but suffice to say one of my responsibilities is to examine in detail every single activation and subsequent claim for exemption. If an officer has no valid reason for being exempted do they have to pay the fine and take the points? Yes, my friend, they do. Doesn't make me the most popular person in the world but that's just tough. I'm not paid to do an easy job.

And I'm afraid to say that in my 18 years experience yes, I have booked police officers for speeding and arrested serving officers for drink-drive and other offences. There are always bad apples and they get dealt with. Could I have turned a blind eye? Of course I could, but then I would have no personal integrity which is why I and the vast majority of my colleagues would not.

Now stop equating your perception of the modern police service to 'The Shield' or 'Life on Mars'. Get over it and move on. <_<

I had forgotten about this thread until your post in another one referring to it.

Please let me reply to your post to clear up any confusion.

Bad feeling? The fact that my views do not tally with your experiences does not mean I have bad feeling against the police. Far from it. As people have said, they do a difficult job and cope with situations that I don't think I could deal with.

I have a lot of respect for the force. For example, when we were discussing unlicensed, uninsured drivers and you mentioned the new powers the police have against the powers they had a few years ago, I actually did something about it. I DID take the time to make a FOI request and received the information that in the first trial (1st of August to 31st August, 2006) 158 cars were seized with only 50% being reclaimed. I also took the time to reply to the County force confirming that I had noticed far fewer boy racers of late and complimenting them on a great job.

That is not to say that I cannot express an opinion that is not positive. The current attitude and policy surrounding speeding is not adequate IMHO. I know that coppers on the street are not responsible for dictating policy but they are responsible for enforcing it. If there is sour grapes then it is because I regularly see police cars driving above the limits when they are not on a shout. Now, I drive above the limit when it's safe to do so but I run the risk of getting nicked. Then again, I'm not employed by the country to enforce these rules whereas a Police Officer is.

As for my attack on the integrity of the modern police force. That's a bit strong mate, isn't it? All I was saying was that these things go on. You are claiming that I in some way am attacking the integrity of the force which means you disagree that it happens.

    Difference of opinion, that's all.

Please don't take it personally but accept it in the manner it was intended. As an opinion, offered on a discussion forum that I have developed by observing, reading and experiencing something that differs from your experience. I fully accept that nothing like this ever happens in Telford :)

You seem determined to make me out as some sort of police hater which I am not. I value your opinions and have learnt that your posts are informative and worth reading. I would be disappointed if you hold a few comments I have made to be in any way a personal attack on you, which they obviously were not.

ps. What are The Shield and Life on Mars?

  11. When I was on a Traffic Department down south a colleague of mine was driving an unmarked car when he received an emergency call. He reversed into a side road, and pulled out too soon - was hit by a taxi driver who failed to equate the noise of the sirens to the unmarked car in front of him.

Yes, it was careless driving on the part of my colleague. -_- His supervisors reported him for the offence and he was convicted of careless driving. We all supported him in court and had a whip round to pay his fine. :(

And what happened to the taxi driver? Turns out he was actually using a false name and was driving without insurance and was already disqualified. Oh, and he failed a breath test. Was he prosecuted?....er..no he wasn't as he was seen as an innocent victim of some poor police driving. <_<

So Larry (Knock-on), hows does that one sit with your police conspiracy theory? :p

Sad to say but this will be the first of many fatalities involving the misuse of off-road and mini-motos on our streets.

Firstly, the officer has made a mistake and it's correct he paid for it. This is not always the case though ;)

Second, the Taxi driver should have had his car impounded regardless of blame. With the new powers the police have, hopefully unlicensed menaces like this can be taken off the road.

I have to say though that not knowing much about this case, it's hard to comment on. In my experience, sometimes drivers make mistakes. Most people have very little training to use their cars on the road and accidents happen. Sometimes there is careless driving and sometimes it's literally just an accident. There must have been sufficient evidence in this case for a prosecution and that's what happened this time ;)

Going back to the case in hand, the driver made a mistake and somebody died. If he had not of made the mistake, the man would in all probability been alive. However, was it due to careless or dangerous driving?

    The facts here are:

"I have seen videos of him driving around that afternoon and he was driving on the road without leathers, without a helmet, without a licence and without insurance and he had cannabis in his system.

Responsibility for this accident and subsequent death must rest largely with the bike rider and I find it difficult to punish the driver in this situation unless there was sufficient evidence to suggest he was driving at a level far below what would normally be expected.

In today's culture, we always need someone to blame whereas sometimes, accidents just happen.

  12. I guess you could add a sound system and play an exhaust note sample with the volume control attached to the throttle cable. :D

    Electric7.jpg

I suggest the Crazy Frog soundtrack.

"Ding, dings, ding, ding, Bwaaaaaahhhhhh, Bwahhh, bwahhhh, ringdingdingding ding.

    :p
