    Scorpio Engine

The DOHC engines are not Zetec or Duratec, but are an older generation that are quite suitable for use in our context. The 2.3 DOHC 16-valve is derived from the 2.0 DOHC 16-valve, which itself is a derirative of the 2.0 DOHC 8-valve (as fitted to Sierra & late-model mk3 Granada), but the 2.3 has some fundamental differences on the crank, as it incorporates a Lanchester balancer shaft. This makes the engine slightly taller than the 2.0, so is probably unsuitable for an 2B, as it would simply make ground clearance and/or bonnet (bulge?) clearance a bigger issue. As standard, the EFi's were (when new!) : The 2.3 DOHC 16-valve "Y5A" gave 147bhp @ 5600 with 150 lbft @ 4250 The 2.0 DOHC 16-valve "N3A" gave 136bhp @ 6300 with 129 lbft @ 4200 The 2.0 DOHC 8-valve "N9B" gave 125bhp @ 5500 with 128 lbft @ 2500 (Only the 2.0 DOHC 8-valve ever came in a carburettor version, but less power) I believe the 2.0 DOHC 8-valve is the best option - just look at the low-rev torque delivery. This 8-valve engine is mostly found with the excellent MT75 gearbox, instead of the A4LDE auto that is on the vast majority of 16-valve 2.0 or 2.3 engines. Maybe you could fit a Type 9 box to a DOHC, but its probably not easy as I think the bolt pattern is different. On the basis that you would have to use the MT75, then only the 2B-DOHC chassis is suitable as the MT75 is wider than the Type 9. The MT75 can be very easily rebuilt at low cost to incorporate the high 5th gear from the rare Diesel Granada/Scorpio MT75 box, and allied with the rear LSD from the (even rarer) 4x4 DOHC Sierra (3.9:1) can give nice results in a 2B-DOHC SS chassis without sacrificing acceleration due to the 8-valve torque characteristics.

    Granada Cosworth

The Sierra rear track is listed as 1468 mm The Granada rear track is listed as 1492 mm = 24 mm difference (12 mm per side further out) This is when fitted with standard offset wheels. The Cosworth however will inevitably have a different offset on its standard wheels, so maybe it messes the figures up, other wheels will mean a recalculation is on the cards ! I have a Granada rear axle fitted in my DOHC 2B and it fits with no visible problems .. still building though. maybe this helps .. maybe it doesnt ... maybe it confuses the issue ... sorry !
  3. OK ... thanks ... I will try it and check the view etc ... maybe post a pic of them when done
  4. Does anyone know if using say Mercedes or BMW door mirrors is OK for SVA The ones I have in mind have a sprung mechanism such that if knocked give way then go back to position. They also have the side flasher repeater embedded on the outside. Has anyone successfully used these and passed SVA ? I have asked at the Nottingham centre, but they would only say ... "bring it in for SVA test to see" ... not exactly the guidance i wanted, as I won't be ready for SVA for another year or so I think. Anyone any comment ?

    Superspec Gearbox

I am building a DOHC 2B and recently went to the trouble of checking my MT75 ratios on a jury rig in the workshop (very boring - wont be doing that again!), the box came from my donor, so probably different, but it verified as: reverse = 3.51 1st = 3.89 2nd = 2.08 3rd = 1.34 4th = 1.00 5th = 0.82
  6. I have read, on the net, quite a lot about SVA (but I'm still about 9 months away), but the actual definition (material, height, width, angle etc.) of a fly-screen seems to be vague. Anybody have any experience of what the test centre will pass ?
  7. To me it sounds like a coil problem. under light load they can produce a spark good enough to ignite the fuel. when u open the throttle the fuel can effectively quench the (already weak) spark and it then misfires I would try substituting a known good coil ( i.e. borrow one to test this ! )

    2 Litre Twin Cam

I too have a DOHC kit ... no SVA yet and not running (still building) but i decided on this cos i drove the EFI donor car for about 2 years regular ... it was smooth, fast (~125 bhp) and economical (25 plus when u hammered it .. else almost 40mpg) and i could get fault codes from the EEC-IV and the ABS, so was fairly logical and straightforward to diagnose when i did have a (rare) problem. So far, I have not had a serious problem, although they are known to suffer cracked cylinder heads if overheated. .. another reason to choose was also simply cos i know it very well ... sometimes it pays to stick to what you know.

    Monocoque "boing!"

hmm ... I always thought you needed white fluffy balls to play tennis tho .... ( I'm sure my wife would think the colour wouldnt match that of my 2B anyhow )
  10. nice link, but don't click it if you have have dial-up ... its 33.5 Meg !
  11. Ok.. but do you know the height limit of a flyscreen or where I can find out ?
  12. I only have limited info, but was told the speedo drives for the MT75 box on the DOHC were this ... drive gears are all 7 teeth pinions can vary ... (depends on wheel size & diff ratio) blue are 23 teeth red are 24 teeth purple are 25 teeth yellow are 26 teeth so if you want to make the speedo read higher, use a pinion with less teeth ( think I got that the right way round )
