is there a better simpler way to sort this ??

Fit the Sierra flasher and hazard system post 1987. It is load independent, you can even add a trailer socket and have bulbs (non led) in all places without changing the flash rate.

Oh no it don't ---- all Wiring, switches & relays from G reg Sierra --- all fine until I fitted LED front indicators ---- had to change flasher unit to electronic -- now working fine. With the top post could the prob be that the flasher unit employed works from ? 20 watts? to 120 so now all led is too low a current draw??

I'm in the same boat with LED front indicators. (Yes, a straight swap - NO bias resistor needed ;) ) and I ordered some ballast resistors to replace the load the original lamps had.

They've taken so long though, I have now ordered an electronic replacment for the relay. See which gets here first.

Hmm, which is best ? Ballast resistors or electronic flasher relay ? - - - - Fiiiigght !

(Pass the pop corn ... )

Simon.

Sarcastic comments don't make me wrong, however they do confirm the poster's childish nature and the fact they have failed to research the topic in any way.

Public apologies will be accepted.

Bob, I don't know what wiring you have / had and the modifications you have made so I can't comment upon your problems with LED bulbs or LEDs with resistors or whatever you did or didn't do.

According to the Haynes manual there is a difference on the Sierra pre and post 1987. Pre 1987 uses a single item No 106 for the flasher and indicator switches while post 1987 (1990) uses a Direction indicator Flasher Relay item No 66 (45) and a Direction indicator / Hazard Switch item No 61 (46). The other difference in the diagrams being the trailer connector is not shown for pre 1987.

Having said that from a short evaluation I don't see why the pre 1987 wiring should work differently, however it may not have the guts to run the trailer bulbs.

As you say your G registered car 1988? should be as mine 1990 and any other Sierra after 1987 as to how the indicators work? As you can see the indicators are turned on and off by a relay so are not load sensitive up to the rating of the relay.

I think you might find Direction indicator Flasher Relay item No 66 (45) is what others are referring to as an Electronic flasher but what Ford fit and chose to call it I don't know.

If you think my comments were meant as sarcasm - fair enough.

Except as I don't understand sarcasm you should not have assumed I meant it that way.

Apologies - what for? Knowing my subject? I have designed and built electronic devices and maintain them frequently with respect to computers and such.

Or did you mean you wish to apologise? Was that a sarcastic remark?

Thanks for your apology then,

Simon.

As I stated Alan, G reg (early 1987?) flasher relay, coluum switches & wiring (to 4x 21watt lamps + 2 LED side repeaters) was taken without modification (except conductor length)& fitted to Florin,so your broad brush comment of system not being load sensitive was wrong for our donor car. Do not know if/when any Sierra flasher system was UNABLE to detect reduced load (failure of one or more lamps)

I care not to spend hours researching Haynes or any other tome; just stating that your statement was wrong for our donor supplied system.
