Cams In A Blacktop

Do all aftermarket/fast road cams require the fitting of shims when putting them in a blacktop? Any that are a direct swap? As in out with the old in with the new and turn the key?

As with changing any cam (even like for like) where the tappets are adjusted using shims it will need them checking and adjusting (changing) as required

What shape are these shims,Rob? why can't they be made from shim steel? A hoody + a days labour will normally save at least 50p.!!

I'm thinking....silver steel bar of the right diameter...stick it in the lathe to part it off at a thickness close to the desired shim thickness and then onto the surface grinder to take the last few thou off....

OY!!! give over Richard, my idea. Pack of shim steel - 9 sheets each 12" x 4" sizes between 2 & 15 thou ( 0.05mm - o.38mm) plus a washer punch.

I was going to comment about the differences between black-smiths and engineers but I thought better of it

The only difference is blacksmiths have bigger hammers & can light fires --- no that can't be right.

While we're on the subject of zetec cams, any opinions of the best and best value fast road kits on the market?

It a case of what you want your car for. A cam that is for track will make the car almost undrivable in town so if you want mainly track use then you may live with the fact that traffic jams and towns will be difficult. O it is a case of doing your homework and decideing the one that suits you driving requirements the best.

I'm after fast road, I will track the car I'm sure but I get more day to day fun out of it on the road.

If I was generalising I'd say go for something around the 270-280 degree duration but not much more than that; what most salesman would call a "rally cam".

Talk to Newman cams , I recently fitted their fast road cam to my pinto 2.1,it in a different world 144 at the crank and will pull from 1100in 5th , and also don't need the 20 mins at 2000 bit ,build it with graphogen, 200 mile run in and its done , phase 2 is their name for it HTH mowerman
