Yes, i don't need the cat. My ECU is fully mapped/programmable. Won't be easy to get it setup, but theoretically it should have no problem w/ the custom (smog equipment-less) setup.

Note, there are only 500 SPCNS Certificate of Sequences per year for the ENTIRE of california.

Hi Elwe,

I was interested to see your comments re the Ford Duratec being a Mazda motor.

I've heard this before but never been able to get confirmation. I've got a 2003 Mazda 323 2ltr Sport. So does this mean when it get's older and starts needing spares I can buy them from a Ford dealer?

Also do you know if any other parts are shared ie suspension, brakes etc?.......Jez

BTW, i just got my SPCNS Certificate of Sequence (if anyone is interested). It allows me to license the hood w/out having to pass smog!!! ;)

I am.... I'd love to import mine over here at a later date... :)

Being a 2ltr Pinto with big carb I don't think it has any chance of passing a smog test....

How did that all work out? Was it easy to get?

The new 'Ford' Mondeo makes me laugh. They were going to use the Mazda 6 across the Ford group but Volvo refused the Mazda chassis on safety grounds. So the new Mondeo is now a Volvo S60 with a Mazda engine. The new Mazda 6 when it appears will also be a Volvo S60. The Volvo S60 will be getting the Duratec. Obviously the body panels and interiors are customised to the brand they are being sold under.

The Ford group are standardising on the Volvo S60 with a Mazda Duratec for each brands saloon car. Simularly the Focus ST2 is using a detuned version of the Volvo T5 engine. The aim is to reduce the number of designs in use accross the group and save money. VW Audi Group have been good at this but with the new Golf they have started offering the 1.9TDI of VW origin or the 2.0TDI of Audi origin which is a bit strange since they are so simular and most of the Audis are now using the VW 1.9.

The most difficult part will be finding out what parts are common on what models. Often within a single model there are several different options. Just look at the number of brake options on the Ford Sierra. Some bits also appeared on the Granada or the Escort but finding out which isn't easy.

Maybe they considered an engine capable of lugging a Volvo estate a bit too much fun in a Focus

No, i have no sample map. I am completely on my own. It may never start!!!

Yes, the duratec is definitely from the mazda side, tho i hear it was designed by cosworth.

Careful w/ that wine, mick.

So, Salt/Dan, u r looking to import ur hood to the US?? Pinto, eh? Well, pinto's are so old, they probably will be fine on their own right. ie, anything older than 1976 is smog exempt.

The SPCNS process was much more difficult than it shouldve been. They require receipts from all major part purchases, and a "certificate of origin" from the kit-maker. Well, obviously RH doesn't have the COO, but i was able slide by w/ that official looking invoice that RH sends out. I think they felt sorry for me.

Going back to the start of this thread, how much is the Duratec-type9 bell housing?

Also if anyone is thinking of using one there is a company called GTS Tuning who have developed a plenum style intake that is very compact and looks the Muts nuts too. They have a small write up in this months PPC magazine.

Cheers.
