What Head Have I Got ?

Guest john

Can anyone help with this ?

Today I stripped a pinto head ready for rebuild, having acquired it from a reputable member as a 2 litre. But while working I thought ''what if it aint ? ''

And I couldn't decide how to tell the difference.

Can anyone tell me how to work out from the numbers or measurements if its 2 litre, or 1.6 or what ever.? please.

Thanks in advance for any help.

John.

John,

If you look in Haynes for the specs on the valve sizes & you have a set of vernier calipers you should be able to work it out from there as the sizes are different...

From memory 2L are 32mm & 36mm but I may be talking shiite...

Any numbers on the casting??

Dan :)

ok, just been to measure them.

My valves are 36 and 42 mm at their max diameter.

My Haynes does not give this info in the valve spec section, bless 'em !! :(

so I 'm still no nearer.

Hi John

I know on the older engines the code for the heads are

1600cc 6

2000cc 0

You may be able to tell by the stamp for the unleaded codes next to number four spark plug hole

1600cc M, MM, N OR NN

1800cc S OR SS

2000cc L, P, PP, R OR RR

Hi Chris.

It looks like i have an older head, there is nothing stamped by number 4 plughole.

I have found these at various points on the top.....

36 & 42 sounds like the 2L to me... Guess I got mixed up!

I think the info might be on Dave Andrews website as to which valves are in which head.... no time to look, you'll have to go search sorry...

Get to Dave Andrews from http://nw.rhocar.org

I can confirm that 2L heads have 42 inlets and 36 exhausts for definite.

You might have another look at the gasket face round number 4 plug space for stamped letters like the one below.

Nigel

Another give away for an injected head which must therefore be 2L and have hardened valves is the cam shaped inlet ports.

Terry and Nigel, that looks pretty conclusive that its a 2.0, albeit an old one.

( Couldn't find any marks like your pic Nigel, )

Curious that my haynes just states '' Valve spec as for 1.3 litre'' for all the sizes of SOHC engine, without giving any diameters there either ! :(

Oh well,

Thanks for the replies chaps. :) :)

Hi John

Had a look at my old Pinto and the codes you have given from your head match it

all but the last.

My head reads 32HM 60906A
