First Insurance For The Kids

No. 1 is 16 tommorow and thoughts of first car are high in our minds especially as No. 2 follows a year later followed by No.3 with only 2 1/2 years to No. 4.

I want to get a car for them in about 6 months with a view to running it to work and back to find out any issues i should deal with.

But the price of insurance is astronomical, Lowest 900 quid for a 1.1 Corsa.

Any ideas on cars and insurance?

The quotes were for the Girls i have'nt the guts to ask for the boys yet :(

if your going to be main drive and then list them on your policy, try CIS, alternatively, a few of my friends are with direct line, you'll be able to get it lower than that if you have a look around :)

Yes, cheaper as a named driver but eventually they'll get stung when they change over anyway.... it's just delaying the inevitable :D

One thing you could think of.... there's some reasonable classic car ltd mileage policies around now that will accept young drivers if they are part of owners club.

They won't get no claims as such but they can get a letter stating that they are "accident free" which helps immensely.

Could be a case for an old mini, Herald something of that ilk.... Depends how badge conscious they are I guess & whether they can get away with it at college, most old cars are seen as cool these days I think... can get a good Herald for a grand or so.... Whatch out for the rust... Practical classics is a good source of ads for cars & insurance....

I'd rather be stung later when I have more money

but it depends if they're gonna go to uni? I'm not keeping the clio through uni as there isn't anywhere for me to keep it, do you loose the ncb if you don't drive for a certain number of years?

I'll be keeping the kitcar at home as that just goes down with age for when i come back to play with it :D

we've got a convertible herald in the garage, it starts first time everytime (even if it hasn't been touched for a month or so) but if I'd say a mini would definately be more fun for me as an only car but it depends what they want from a car?

PS. RETRO IS COOL :D

Direct Line are advertising that named drivers can build no claims discounts on their new policies. might be worth a try with you as policy holder?

yeh I've got a few mates doing that, it works out quite reasonably, also got a friend with Norwich union using the 9 month accelerated NCB scheme, ie you insure the car for 9 months at a time and you get what counts as a years ncb after those 9 months, not sure if all other companies accept it when it comes to renewal though, could be worth a try

The only catch with this scheme is that the NCB is only valid with Direct Line, you can't move it to another insurer :(

Foxy, You'll be pleased to hear that the '5' has gone........................got a new 3 convertible instead    :p

my son was 17 last june and passed his test last july.

i brought him a fiat punto sx 1.1 and insured it with quoteline direct under a accelerated starter policy on 10000 miles a year with him as the only driver and it cost me £606 for the first 6 monhs but then gave him 1 years NCB at the end of six months. when we renewed it after the six months it had come down to £600 for a full 12 months.

they will of course then be building up their own NCB so it should get cheaper and cheaper provided nothing nasty happens. :o

Retro is very cool, I have a 1970 triumph and a 1975 MG and both are cool!

The triupmph will be even better once I finish the restoration. :o

I had a corsa as my first car. Would much rather have had an old MGB - would have leant so much more about cars, and been able to cruise (as that's what you do in your first car....?) around in real style. Would expect the insurance to be much better (maybe even specialist insurance as classic car?) and possibly exempt from tax too.

NCB is valid for two years whilst not attached to a policy, after that you lose it.

You may find you can "attach" it to a specialist insurance such as classic or Kit car to keep it alive even though you will not accrue any more...

The cheapest we managed to get for Abby and the V reg 1200 corsa was with 'A Quote' at £1060. We have been told it will drop to about £850 after the first year. At least she is building her own ncb
