Clutch Pawl

Recommended Posts

Whilst trying to modify my Yellow half circle clutch pawl it slipped and the locating bits broke off, so now i need a new one.

Plenty on ebay but they dont tell you the measurements just how many teeth they have on the ratchet, 25, 26, or 27, which one do i need and does anyone have a part number.

I am now so near to it moving under its own steam, if i can only get the clutch to disengage.

I was amazed to find that my local autofactors had various sizes in stock for about a fiver each. I opted for a 50mm one (I think they are available in 45 (standard), 50 and 55mm, although the 55mm one I looked at was less than a semi-circle and wasn't suitable.

Thanks Swan it does help however according to the diagram i have the half circle "Fiesta" one????

Enforcer, i have a 55mm pawl and like you it was a quadrant not a semi circle.

It was bl**dy frustrating as i was so close to moving for the first time.

Paul,

we seem to have been round this before!- here is my reply from last time the question was asked-

Sorry to be a while giving info requested. The Andrew Page part number I’ve got is CHA1388, CPR2. Other info on the packing is CPR2, clutch pawl kit, escort/ fiesta, 1986 on, 6189055. The bushes and spring in the replacement kit are not very good quality so I re-used the Ford ones. The guys in Page’s were very helpful- they got about 7 variants of this out for me to compare and the above info is of the one I chose.

HTH,

Brian

Brian is right, you want the Fiesta one. Not the Granada 55mm quadrant.

They are about a fiver. With the 55mm you shouldn't have top modify it further. The extra 10mm diameter pulls about an extra 7 or 8mm of cable, not much but enough.

i've had the yellow red and black versions fitted at one time or another and none sorted the problem out. Eventually did the mod suggetsed by other members ie fix a small ali plate to the pawl this is not only a quick solution but mine has been working fine for last 12 months and avoids dissassembling the pedal box and refitting. Try a search on the site sure you will find who originally poseted this as a fix.

just a thought paul

why not modify the clutch pedal to accept the older type clutch cable and has the adjuster nuts on the cable..

and do away with the pawl altogether

I've got a redundant yellow semi circular pawl free to a good home if you want it.

Theres no ratchet bit but it's intact and and yours should fit anyway.

If you want PM me and with your address and it'll be in the post first thing tomorrow.

Cheers

I must admit I have put a plate on mine now like Sir Chris Brown. It pulls more cable & is "adjustable" to a certain degree (you can vary length & thickness of plate).

I had a 1mm thick piece of ally on to start, these days it's 4 or 5mm as I needed to pull more cable (my pedal box & scuttle is weird & it pulls less cable than most).

Just cut the plate to the same width as the quadrant & attach it to the plastic with 4 self tappers (the heads of these also help keep cable central, you will need to drill the plastic or it will crack). Relieve the bottom edge (like a ramp).

I reckon modifiying the quadrant is better as it retains the auto adjustment. The other thing is that the mod makes it pull a greater length of cable (which makes up for the lack of pedal travel in the 2B which is what causes the problem).

If you use the old system I don't think you can make it pull more cable you can only make the cable tighter (which means the engagement when you release the pedal won't be as positive). At least that's the way I see it but I've been wrong before!!

Dan :D

Ps. by my reckoning for every 5mm bigger diameter you go it pulls around an extra 5mm of cable (just a guess using some approx mathematics). On my 2nd car the 55mm one just wasn't enough. The radius on mine must be something like 65mm now.

I think Salty is correct having had experience with both. Alan Rowe had problems with his (now owned by Bazwas) and the only way I found of getting over the problem was to extend the upper end of the clutch pedal so the cable got more movement for the same input of foot movement. This mod was more difficult to do than putting a strip of ally on the quadrant and you still have the problem of adjusting correctly as the clutch on the Sierra is designed to have the release bearing in contact with the fingers on the pressure plate at all times and this is achieved by the spring which holds the quadrant back and the cable tight. Using the old type of manually adjusted cable means you have to attach a spring between the clutch release arm and the front of the bellhousing to keep the release bearing in contact otherwise they rattle like mad
