Thanks for the offers of Idle Air Control Valves guys, but I've managed to fix my one. Andy's suggestion of soak it in WD40 worked, a lot of black gunk came out of it and now it idles much steadier and doesn't randomly stop.

them damn midges! I'm pock marked today, damn itchy grrr!!!!! a few on each arm, but one even made it up my trouser leg?!?!
