Diff Making Horrible Noise

Finally narrowed the noise from my car to the diff. It is a big heavy clonking when the car is jacked up and the engine ticking over in 5th. I thing something is loose inside.

Rather than buy another second hand unit I figure it is best to get a refurbished item.

So here's the question, does anybody know of a refurb company in the Notts area?

No but i partexed my clunky diff for a refurb one and i paid about £280 and that was mates rates. So hard to find a decent diff these days that prices are high.

Might be worth taking a chance on a second hand low milage diff if you can get hold of one. I did pick up a second hand one from a scrappy after getting a refurbed one, paid £50 and on opening it, found it had all pretty much new parts inside and they all had recon part numbers on.

You take your chances i guess!

What diff ratio are you running Tim?

If its a 3.6 then just buy a second hand one, they are cheap and plentifull, if its a 3.38 or 3.14 get it rebuilt.

|The only thing that kills a diff is the crown wheel and pinion being worn out, if the crown wheel and pinion is fine then that can be put in any diff, even an LSD.

You could get a cheap 3.6 diff and put your crown wheel and pinion in or get an LSD and just use youe Crown wheel and pinion and get an LSD diff for the same rebuild price that you were going to pay, win win.

Tim,

Glad to know you got to the bottom of it. I have yet to change my diff over again.

I too would like to know where I can get it done without shelling out too much.

I have 1 knackered, 1 in the car with the overrun noise, and 1 that feels sweet --but I will wait and seewhat it sounds like. All 3.92.

Tim what diff are you looking for? I have an open lobro one somewhere in the back of my garage. You would have to use your own back plate with it as it hasn’t got one, but it’s yours if you want it.

I think it is a 3.92 but wouldn’t swear to it

The saga took another turn today when I spoke to the bloke at Kit Fit. Having described symptoms and answered a few of his questions I am now thinking wheel bearings. As they are the only bit of the back end that hasn't been replaced or, to be honest even looked at since the donor, it will be a cheaper fix. The noise was present with the first diff and second so I would need to be one unlucky bugger to have had two diffs with an identical problem. But then again ..............................

Check the wheel bearing nut is gut bustingly tight both sides and jack it up to check for play like you do in the fronts. Hold at 6 and 12 o'clock and try to rock the wheel. Should be a barely detectable movement. Half shaft joints could also come into the equation. I changed both shafts on daughters 106 before a friend pointed out the dodgy wheel bearing. That was 120 quid well spent, NOT!

In the process of getting the car ready to change the wheel bearings I had to take the drive shafts off. Having done that i ran the car up in gear just spinning the diff and bugger me there was the noise but much quieter. Close inspection of the prop revealed some play in the rear UJ. So I will making a few phone calls on Monday as the prop has done less than 5000 miles. I will get to the bottom of the noise even if it kills me, unless my back gets me first. :(

I managed to get my sciatic nerve trapped about 5 weeks ago, excercises and a some anti inflamatory drugs moved the pain out of my back and well and truely into my right leg. The result is I have had cramp in my right calf and pins and needles in my foot for two weeks now. I eventually broke down on Friday and demanded some bloody big pain killers. With those secured I managed to find a massuer who could give me a deep tissue massage. He told me that on a scale of 1-10 the pain would be an 8. He lied. As he pointed out I had quite a severe cramp in my calf he ramped the pain up to a good 9. The relief when he had finished was immense. He did warn me though I would feel some more pain today. He was right there as I woke at 3am and could not get back to sleep. I'm hoping tonight the sleep deprivation and big drugs will kick in. Alex comes back on Wednesday to dig his elbows in again, I must be mad.

i can feel your pain. i split a disc (irrepairable) 5 years ago falling of a military lorry and it squished my nerve. ended up being kicked out and now have perminantly bad back and sciatica(comes and goes) in my left leg. 5 years on im getting used to it. Just a quick hint however, my spinal specialist said that physio can make a trapped nerve and sciatia worse as it can cause more inflamation. best is a few days or weeks rest and then, when it has settled down, get some physio to get the back moving. thats just my case and it may not relate to yours but i thought id pass it on. i know of some good (LEGAL) prescription drugs for this kinda thing. tramadol hydrocloride for the pain, amytiptalyne for getting your nerve system to relax and help the pain killers work (if you wiki that drug it shows up as a anti depressent as that is what it was first designed for but proved to work better as a signal blocker). another good pain killer is codeine phosphate, not as good but good for topping up on top of tramadol. (standard dose of the drug like tramadol is about 50mg 4 times a day. i ended up on 400mg 8 times a day. Had to ween myself off as they were killing me and doctors were not bothered and just tryed to keep me going on em as it was less hassle for them. down side is tramadol and amytriptalyne combined will stop you driving for about 48 hours as you just feel drunk for that period of time.

One doc even said in whispered tones, "why dont you just buy some cannabis and try that". :o

hope you get better soon

Regards

Fozzy
