Suspension Rubber O-rings

I'm not sure what they are called, but the bottom of the suspensions struts have rubber rings that are warn and need replacing (see pic). I'm not sure what they are called (are they the bushes?). I also don't know where to get replacements from as the local places only sell the shocks as a whole.

I'm presuming that there is a mail-order place, but I can't find it (and don't know what to search for!).

Any help appreciated!

Hi folks,

Yes, they are the bushes. If you do a quick Google for suspension bushes you will see a large number of sites. Have a look here and you may get some ideas on both rubber and Polyurethane bushes.

Rubber and Poly bushes

Polybush

Superflex website

As you can see from the sites, you have to establish the internal bore diameter for the bolt, the external rubber bush diameter and the width of the bush and whether you want a direct replacement of rubber/metal or poly.

The first site gives some good advise with selecting and fitting the bushes you want. It does talk about the interference fit required to keep the bushes in place. you may find either a hydraulic press or nut/bolt and big washers of use to get the new bushes in place (and maybe a squeeze of washing liquid to get them moving).

Hope this helps.

My mechanic friend did a tour of the motorbike shops and they didn't sell the bushes. Only the whole suspension assembly.

Now I know that they are the bushes for the Zimmeride shocks, one call to GreatBritishSportsCars and I've ordered 4 new bushes. Thanks for the help folks! Hopefully this is the last major problem before taking it to the garage to fix the hand-brake cable (I can't get it up to fix) and then an MOT!

Having replaced these more than once I talked to the rep from Gaz and he said that the bushes were overloaded at that size and would always fail quickly as these are only designed for the lighter loads of a shock absorber.

The Gaz ones have a bigger ring bigger bush and require the mounts to be drilled oversize to take a larger diameter bolt.

Funnily enough I bought two new bushes today (£4-60 each) - I got them from a motorbike shop, but it's an old fashioned one that specialises in BSAs and has proper shelves full of parts everywhere. The common size seems to be 22 mm dia, 24mm long with a bore suitable for a 3/8" bolt.
