Ground Clearence

Most of my driving is on fen roads which are notoriously bad. To give adequate sump clearance I did the usual sump shortening mod and also fitted 195/65 tyres on 15" rims, this gives me 5" clearance. I don't have to worry anymore about bad roads or speed humps!

Just out of interest, are there any different versions of the standard sump. I ask as I've never had too many problems with mine and wonder if it a "naturally" shorter version - I've never bothered shortening it, as it is already level with the bottom of the flange on the gearbox bellhousing.

Yes, there are a number of different depths of sump (and a number different dipsticks too!) There is an original equipement sump that is the correct depth, but they are scarce, and I don't know what they were fitted to originally.

That would explain it. Unfortunately I have no idea where it came from either, as I bought my donor already stripped and the 2l engine was not original to the donor.

How much clearance have others got as I changed the oil in my 2ltr pinto the other day and slid a tray under measuring exactly two and three quarter inches under my shortened sump...
you have a problem, 2¾" is nowhere near enough clearance, you need to wind up your shockers!!

Mine with a ally RS sump is 3"/ 77mm ground clearance , too low for limbo dancers.

The legal maximum height for speed bumps is 100mm, or 4" so you've all got problems if you don't see it before you hit it!!

Can be expensive and getting rare but the Escort RS 2000 has a short ally sump with a side wing for extra capacity.

If you are getting a sump welded it would be worth adding some baffles and windage peices.

Hey guys,

You lot are giving me a complex... :cray: I only have 1 3/4" clearance using the ally RS sump. Mine is on sliding pillar, so would this give a lower ride?? :db:
