The pinto timing is 8deg standard not 0 aim, my bike carbed pinto is 12deg with a fast road bestek set up peaking at 33deg. my vernier is 6deg retarded with standard injection cam gave another 6bhp on the dyno

You seem to be confusing cam timing and ignition timing.

A timing strobe is for setting ignition timing. Connect your timing light to the battery and number 1 plug lead. Ignition off. Turn or rock the engine till the timing marks on the crank pulley are visible. Put a dot of tippex or white paint on the 12 degree notch on the pulley rim and the pointer bit of the engine. Loosen the bolt at the base of the distributor until you can turn the distributor by hand but its pretty stiff. If there is a vacuum pipe from carb to dizzy disconnect it from the dizzy and block it with a nail. Ignition on and start the engine and run till it will idle reasonably steady at 900-1000 rpm. Shine strobe at crank with one hand and grip dizzy low down on its metal body. Now turn dizzy till the white mark on the pulley lines up with the pointer on the engine. Switch off engine. Tighten bolt that secures base of distributor. Restart engine and use strobe to check ignition timing is still OK.

Take care at all times to avoid the fan, alternator, belts and all whirly bits which can remove fingers. Avoid dangly sleeves, ties and any other loose clothing which may get caught. Avoid touching the plug leads which can also give you a jolt.

 

Timing up the cam I would suggest you read the advice on piper, kent or burton websites or get a mate round who has done it before. If in doubt leave it set to zero deg at tdc. It wont be very far out and should be safe.

however im still slightly confused. does the ignition timing want to be set to 8 degrees as per "notimpressed" or 12degrees like what nigel said?

It's a variable feast. You have to set it somewhere for a baseline. Then over the first few drives you try advancing it 2 degrees and do 20 miles then another 2 degrees and try another test drive. Reapeat as often as needed including retard till you find the best performance without pinking.

Start at 6, 8, 10 or 12, whatever you like and experiment.
