Building Tressel For A Zero - Questions!

Hi all,

 

What's the best sort of sort of tressel (homemade or purchase) to build the car on?

 

From looking on the web, I have seen the standard GBS tressels to a much larger homemade version that has the car raised pretty high and mostly built.

 

How much of the build is done whilst raised?

 

Does anyone have anything to borrow / sell?

I built some about 18inches high from some old timber, probably 4"x2" if memory serves me right. Left the car on them until just before the engine went in.

I used industrial pallet racking ; 4 beams & 2 cut down ends gave me an open work table 10' x 3' x 2' high a piece of plank or 2 across the upper beams to support the chassis where-ever they weren't in the way. Still have the pallet racking beams & ends, yours if you can collect or arrange same.

I built my trolley out of 40mm steel square tube. Initially I built it too high (but a really nice height to work at) and ended up lowering it to get the engine in. The crane I have wouldn't lift high enough to get over the chassis with the original trolley height.

 

The whole car was built completely on the troller and only lifted off when ready to 'road test'. The good bit about this was it was on wheels so I could push it around in the 'garage' to get more space where I was working. A really benefit when space is limited. It also disassembles with 8 bolts for storing post build.

when i built my 2b after painting the chassis and fitting the floor , i put it onto 4 axel stands, old carpet on the floor ,got some knee pads only came off the stands when i put the wheels on, then used a couple of trolly jacks to get it off the jack onto the floor

I used some saw horses from B and Q, from memory, didn't cost that much and are rated at about 200kg each, so most of the initial build up to engine/gearbox fitting was achieved without breaking my back or knees. Keeping it all high seemed an easy way for me to do my build. Then when the time came, I had a BBQ and got some mates round to do the lift off the trestles and lowered onto axle stands. Same as everyone else after that, trolley jacked off the stands and onto her wheels.

we had some hospital beds come in as scrap so i used the base with the wheels on and welded some uprights in the corners and cross braces and bobs your uncle, could easy push it in and out of the garage on my own(billy no mates). i foolishly gave it to richard at gbs, in hind sight it could have been used by the members but i wanted shot of it .think they wheel the kits outside with it at gbs.

I initially used a couple of builders tressels and had the car at about chest height because I was in a very narrow garage this suited quite well cos there wasn't really room to sit down beside it to work. So it was much easier standing to work.
