Well thanks to Rob (CMA) and Andy (ozz) fault was easily fixed - split in the piece of tube used to block of the expansion outlet on the thermostat housing - all fixed!

 

Shaft - I'd still like to strip the head down for the experience. list of items that I need to buy that would need replacing if this was done would be good

believe its an injection head

Get the engine hot and get a mirror and a light Then have a good look around the pump and stat you will need to remove the t/belt cover. better if you can find the leak

Thanks for the advice, the leak has been found and fixed - it was the pipe that comes out of the top of the thermostat housing and would feed back to the expansion tank. this is blocked off as no expansion tank. The Jubilee clip had cut through the pipe - Pipe replaced = leak fixed.
