Can A Dc Mig Welder Do Stainless?

Hi,

the welder im looking at buying says its a dc mig welder and that it won't do stainless.

I use stainless in my einhell mig without a problem (except it's now broken completely) just use argon instead of co2.

 

are there different types of mig eg AC and DC ?

 

or is the seller wrong?

I might be wrong in my practice but whenever I weld stainless steel I set my welder to DC - so it sounds perfect !

I believe that nearly all mig's are DC and you can weld stainless/aluminium and steel you just need the right wire and gas,

Are you sure that he's not selling a TIG? but then you would use DC to weld stainless and ac to weld aluminium with a TIG?

I of course could be wrong I'm sure an expert will be along shortly.

thanks guys. Its definitely a mig just a cheapish hobby one. It was just strange that someone asked the seller if they could weld Stainless and they said no. maybe i'll just go for it as i don't see why it would be different.

seller is wrong...

you dont even really need stainless wire.... well rh never used it!

A cheap mig might have trouble feeding the stainless wire, but this is the only reason I can think it might not work.

Go have a word with your local welding supplier they usually have cheap second hand trade-in mig's/tig's for sale or they know someone that has.
