Gearbox Ratios Versus Tuning Engine.

Recommended Posts

People spend fortunes tuning there engines me included but few play with there gearbox / diff ratios. This year i had to refurb my type 9 so i changed it to the 2.8v6 spec basically 1 tooth differant on the input shaft. The differance in acceleration is interesting, my decent zetec blew up so i.m running a tired zetec probally 160bhp. Alfa gta has an indy 2.0 zetec prob weighs <500kg my stylus prob weighs 650kg in the 0 to 60 dash nowt in it 60 on the stylus starts to edge it (aerodynamics) come into play.

I have lost power but gained performance, looking forward to rebuilding the zetec now with the big cams etc 190bhp should be rather fun !! Moral of the story sort your gbox and diff ratios it makes the car so much better...

The standard type 9 wa ok behind a pinto.....first was a waste of time though.

But when I fitted the redtop, the box became a real problem.

So I saved up my pennies & got an E6 from BGH which transformed the car.

Worth every penny.

Type 9 in a seven. 1st gear is always going to be useless unless you have a sick 1300 pinto driving it. The rest of the ratios are reasonable. A 3.92 diff and 13" wheels can improve the acceleration. But in the end you will want a better box of cogs.

Unable to find anything to alter the ratios in my MT75, changing from 3.92 open diff to 3.62 LSD made a huge difference, especially on tight corners and coming off roundabouts, Cosworth 'box is a lot of money and work to fit so it looks like I'm stuck with a pants first gear, usually pull away in second but can't use a lot of throttle as the clutch doesn't like it, engine around 200 bhp.

Give BGH a call....speak to Chris or Brian (Brian G??? Hill...the boss man)

They specialise in type 9s and derivatives (Brian designed the Caterham 6 speed box)

Thay may be able to do something with the MT75.
