Torquing Lh Thread Hub Nut

Probably a stupid question but will a torque wrench work on a left handed thread?

Trying to tighten up the hub nut and need to decide whether to buy an adaptor for the socket so I can use my torque wrench on it or just get a breaker bar and tighten up as much as I can.

Edit: just found an old thread that suggested a 6ft gorilla with a breaker bar :) . I'm 6' 2" and 18 stone - does that qualify? :)

Some older wrenches have a removable drive square.

It just pulls out the turn the wrench over and refit drive square.

Bendy wrenches have a scale for either direction.

Clock dial ones are a no no.

What are you building with l/h thread hub nuts.

If not, you will not cause any damage by putting the torque figure to 'f' tight.

Threads, nuts and axles are all strong enough and the bearing will not be affected.

My word Richard. That would be in the region of 700 lb/ft.

HGV wheel nuts are usually around 350lb/ft on a 18mm thread.

The stub axle nuts with 24mm thread are around your figure.

That means yours are triple f tight.

sounds too much doesn't it...

I guess it was more like most of my weight with feet still on the floor on a 1m breaker & until the nut obv. stopped moving.

No near to worry Richard. You might have stretched the threads a little but I very much doubt it.

It was only a quick calculation anyway. You would have to have your full weight right on the very end of the 1M bar to get to that figure.

16 St x 14 lb x 3.5 rough ft per M = approx torque at drive centre.

EDIT. Done it old fashioned cos that's wot I is.
