Winter Refurbs / Upgrades

Last year i never had time to finish the upgrades i started and have found a few other issues along the way. so i,m now well under way with getting everything ready for scotland 2016. I,m starting from the back this time and working forward.

I removed the axle 2 weekends ago and stripped it completely with a view to fit a different 3.88 diff, thought i had a 4.1 turned out it was a 3.88  so while it was in bits i replaced the outer bearings on the half shafts. Easier said than done. so i bought a 20ton press to do it properly, took 7tons of pressure and blow lamp to remove them. I then made a tool to press the new bearings on.

With the axle off i removed all arms leading. trailing and pan hard and refinished them, most of the powder coat had been replaced by rust. whilst out i have replaced all the urethane bushes with new ones using stainless crush tubes, all were ok except one trailing arm, even found blue ones to match the car. whilst all these were off i have now started to underseal the car, it makes it look like new.

Stage 2 is now under way. I.ve decided to get rid of the sherpa van track rod ends that are used as the bottom ball joints on the stylus. And also correct the camber adjustment as one side is max 0deg with other at 1.5deg due to wishbones being slightly out stopping the correct adjustment. Being 3/4unf i thought about making new wishbones with m18 thread to use transit parts, but didnt know if the taper would fit the mk2 escort hubs. After much googling i found a guy making and selling retro ford performance parts, i have bought taper pins to fit the hubs to then fit to rose joints, 3/4unf rose joints are easy to get and cheap. With the dust boots will last long enough for me with the low miles i do. They will also make setting the geometry easier.
