Superspec Steering Shaft

Hi does anyone know what the lower steering shaft is out of as mine has become rather polished where the splines are and has subsequently wore out the Universal joint. Also what is the Universal joint from a swell

Can't help on the shaft I'm afraid, although we know the steering column itself is off a Mk1 Mondeo, but my lower UJ failed the last MOT so I used one of a Land Rover Discovery

 

 

It was a bit loose initially but the mechanic that helped fit it put each end in a vice and carefully squashed them until they were a tight fit on the shafts.. Then he finished tightening them off with the bolts. The steering rack on the Superspec is off an Escort but apparently the splines are the same.

Is it worth trying to carefully recut the splines back into the shaft as most are still visible

Certainly worth a try. I suppose the last resort would be to weld the shaft to the UJ, although I remember being warned the heat can damage the UJ.

I wouldn't try recutting splines back into the shaft, you could end up with a not perfect fitment and end up stripping the lot off

and have no steering at all..

If you can't find a direct replacement then try to find a local engineering company that can make one up for you

and cut the splines into a new shaft with the right tools or make a fully welded unit for you.

After speaking to GBS, it turns out it is a piece that they manufactured themsleves
