Thermostat

Hi All

Doing a pre check over for a run out tomorrow and it appears my 2.0 blacktop has sprung a leak from the thermostat. I have stripped it all down to have a look and it appears that the paper gaskets have gave way albeit a previous sealant repair too.

I have looked online and can’t seem to find the gaskets on their own, does anyone know where you can get these from, preferably not paper ones.

Reading online and looking at the stat it’s a qth102 that has been fitted so these from Burton come with the gaskets?

make one get gasket paper from auto supplies then put part of the paper on the opening for the thermostat  trace round , cut out takes about 20 mins money saved when putting it on use a small amount gasket sealer both sides .

When I ordered a thermostat from Burton, I was able to order a spare separately. which I did, so pretty sure you get them from there. Or yes buy some quality gasket paper (worth keeping some anyway) and cut your own

Hi Jonty, does the burton stats come with the gaskets? Mine had three fitted which seemed strange but reading online that’s right. If I am going to the work of resealing it I’d rather fit a new one and keep the one off the car as a good spare. I see Burton do the gaskets but mine has two paper and one metal and can’t find it anywhere

Pretty sure it did. Now that I think about it I don't think they made it clear and that's why I ordered one and why I ended up with a spare. Best call them to double check though.

I have dropped them an email across, I wasn’t sure that’s if the stats did as it’s not listed that’s why I found the gaskets but couldn’t find the metal one on there.

Really, but for how long?

Had them in use for years in the past, if you're having issues then you should look at both surfaces to make sure they are flat.

TBH these days I still make them out of cardboard or gasket paper (if I happen to have some) but I do put a thin smear of gasket sealant on both side, only because I have it available.

f you're specifically looking to avoid the paper gaskets, I'd recommend trying to find rubber or composite gaskets

No I am not I always use gasket paper. I was just intrigued by the use of cereal packet (ref. above) and how long that would last.

I would be too but understand the logic. It’s all resolved now i hope just have given it a run out for 5 minutes so will wait and see.

i just can’t see the logic of gasket metal gasket thermostat and gasket which i have found what people used in a few builds. I think that build up of the two gaskets are the most likely cause of the leaks but time will tell.
