  1. Definitely no grub screws visible. Using a magnet shows the main body is steel but chrome I think so I don't want to apply heat. The lower sleeve is aluminium I think. Hope photo helps. The top cover has been removed.
  2. Successful fitting of lovely leather handbrake gaitor so I've moved into the gear one. I thought this would be easy! Just unscrew the knob. Nothing moves even with a lot of force. It's a MOMO aluminium knob. The top unscrews to reveal a thread. Tried grips on this and it doesn't budge. There looks to be a lower sleeve at the base of the knob and I've read elsewhere that this hides some grub screws. It's doesn't budge. I'm so afraid of damaging something by using too much force. Any clues or tricks?
  3. Thanks. A really hard pull and it came off!
  4. I have a Sierra handbrake which I have bought a lovely leather gaiter for. Only thing is it won't fit over the handle. I could unstitch it but it would be great to dismantle the lever end and put back. Can't seem to do it. Is it possible?
  5. Thanks Paul. I think I'm settled on not doing the conversion but a useful link anyway.
  6. Thanks for that. Confirmed my thoughts.
  7. Thanks for that Paul. It seems I'm beaten on that one. It's additive forever then for me.
  8. Thanks chaps. I think I created a red herring with the cam thing. I'm really not after large gains and am not going to change the engine. It's a cheap hardly used cam with followers so may as well drop it in. If £250 is considered a reasonable cost for unleaded conversation then I certainly won't bother. It will be interesting to have the head off anyway to check the condition of everything anyway. A project for a weekend sometime. Thanks for the replies. If anybody thinks they know of somewhere down here that would do the conversion cheaper then do let me know. Cheers.
  9. I've decided to pop a 2ltr cam into my 1600 pinto so at some stage will remove the head. It's not an unleaded one. I thought while it was off I may as well get it converted. There seems to be a lack of workshops down here in the south. The only quote I've had is £250. That seems very steep to me or am I being tight? At that price I won't bother. She runs very well. No smoke and valve clearances stable. I use additive. The cam only cost me £20 and is in good nick.
  10. Thanks for that.Smell is certainly from that area. I presume there is some kind of gasket. I'll take everything apart when it comes off the road and have a good look around. Don't think it's a serious issue but best he safe!
  11. Thanks. I'll have a check. Coming off the road in a few weeks so I may take it out.
  12. Aha..I use additives as it's non unleaded. Looks like a winter job to replace fuel lines then. Cheers
  13. I have been smelling petrol recently. Not from the engine bay but seems to be from the access to the fuel tank where the pipes enter. There is no sign of any leak as it is all dry around there. Followed the pipes and no leaks. Any clues please? David
  14. Sorry Bob. Won't be able to in Oct. Thanks anyway. Dave
  15. I second that. Great to meet everyone and thanks Dave for the use of the ramp even though my list of things to do has got longer! Great fun drive home as well.
  16. Just arrived. Having coffee and quick snack before heading over.
  17. I`ll try and attach a photo of the curve but basically my son had set up his car to run well with good pulling from low revs. The rolling road confirmed this but he discovered the max advance to be 47 degs. Piston melting on the horizon. So he put it to 35 degs which increased the power from 94 to 104 bhp but had a flat spot in the torque around 2500 because the dizzy was not advancing enough at this point. He took it apart but was unable to make any adjustment confidently. It also revealed that my sons economic dizzy purchase was very cheaply made. Probably chinese! A bit of research had shown that people tend to put gti dizzies on the 1600 carb model especially with the fast road cam. So this is the next project for him! By the way the rolling road showed the fuelling to be perfect anyway. An exciting drive home followed with him demonstating his extra bhp to his dad! Like father like son. All legal though!! A great fun and educational day.
  18. Just been to stark with my son's mk2 golf. Very good! Found dizzy has poor advance curve. Going to look into a megajolt. But his 1.6 with Kent cam and webers puts out 104 bhp. Not a bad gain from the 75 original. Scary stuff though at full pelt on the rolling road. Stood well clear. Thanks for the recommendation Paul. May see you Sunday!
  19. She just passed her mot with flying colours so I will be there. David
  20. Booked into SRE on friday. Seems reasonable prices. I'll let you know how it goes if his engine doesn't melt!
  21. Still hoping to come, weather permitting, but just remembered mot runs out the day before. It's booked in so fingers crossed!
  22. I'll be there. It will be great to meet a few members as a relative newcomer. Dave
  23. Thanks guys. I'll look at all of those.
  24. My son wants to rolling road his mk 2 golf with fast cam and webers. I have seen many people up north referring to them costing about £90. Best quote I've had down here in the south is £270! A place near Salisbury. Does anybody know of a place near West Sussex that charges a reasonable amount? Google has not come up with any apart from places that don't deal with good old fashioned technology. They all seem to only deal with remapping high tech stuff. I may put my Rh on for a laugh to see how few horses my 1600 pinto puts out!Fast enough for me and an overconfident 18 year old for the moment. Cheers David
  25. Having another bash at finding any previous owners of my RH S7. It came with little history. Based on 1985 Sierra . 1600 Pinto. Red and Silver. B880 RFD Ring any bells anyone?
