  1. Free to current Rhocar member if anyone wants it. Bog standard stainless silencer with straight front pipe, bent rear, and mounting bracket. Been on the road for 4 years and rattles a bit and highly offensive rasping sound emanates from it. It is so bad, I have just spent 300 notes replacing it. But if you are skint/ adept at repacking/ need one, you are welcome to collect it. Bri (note to self- don't bother getting a job in sales) (North west)
  2. Re BHP rating of filter, I use C3001 as well, as I haven't found a filter with higher rating that will fit under the bonnet. Higher BHP rating= bigger filter. Pays your money and takes your choice! Bri
  3. That's a nice looking job Paul, I hadn't thought of modding the collector but it does a neat job, probably the neatest I've seen. Now I've got a piccy of what I want to take with me I feel happier. Hope it comes out as good! Cheers, Bri
  4. I'm going in this Friday to get a 6" silencer done. I'm planning on keeping the RH 4 into 1 that sits just outside the engine compartment, but it occured to me that I will need some kind of dog leg in the 50mm pipe between the 4-1 and the front of the silencer. Anyone got any pics of how their 6" cans fit so I can get a better idea of what to ask for? FYI, 2B with pinto. TIA, Brian

    Suspension Setup

Keith, do you mind if I ask where you got your new ball joints from? I got an advisory on my MOT because the rubber cover is starting to perish, so I'll need some more some time. Cheers, Brian

    Guess The Mpg

Don't get an engineer going on pedantry. 1 Imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. Cruising at 65, mine would have done 29.695849 miles on 5 litres. If you factor in depreciation/wear and tear etc on the golf, you might find the economics are no so bad. No contest on which would be most enjoyable ,as long as it stays dry ;-) Bri
  7. After following other RHs a fair few times and seeing how hard it can be to see their brake lights, I fancy fitting a high level brake light to help avoid getting rear ended. What are the regs on fitting them (location etc), I've found something that says if they are on vehicle centre line and above other brake lights that's OK- is that right? I plan on making one with leds, any regs on that (number of, viewing angle, intensity)? TIA, Brian
  8. Well, couldn't find a plug with thread to match so went to plan B. Cut hose tail off and tapped the fitting out to M5 (it didn't even need drilling out). A dib of loctite on an M5 button head screw and sorted. Having road tested the brakes with new M/C and no servo, I wish I had done it ages ago. As said in another thread, disconnecting the vacuum doesn't really give you a true feel of braking without servo at all. Cheers, Bri
  9. Ta for replies Gents. I've temporarily bunged up the remains of the old connector with an M8 screw and some self amalg tape, I just fancied making it a bit neater. If I think on I'll unscrew it tonight and have a look in the stores at work in the morning, we've got allsorts of bits and bobs. If I successfully get a match I'll post on here for the future. Cheers, Bri
  10. There has been a fair bit of discussion on here recently about brakes without servo. I took my servo apart after removal to see if the pushrod would be suitable- it wasn't, it is too short. Also, there is an effoff spring in the servo, that when the 2 halfs of the main vac chamber are split, twangs bits into the air. Wouldn't wanted anyone to get hurt doing this, or have someone's bodywork dented by flying metal. Bri
  11. Having done away with my servo, I'd like to properly plug off the vacuum port on the manifold that went to the servo. The ford connector is a tapered thread, like a 3/8 or 1/2 BSPR. Anyone found out what thread it is so I can get an appropriate plug? Ta, Brian
  12. Another recommendation as well. They have a great selection of vinyl and prices are OK. The smell of leather in their unit is fantastic. They did recover and repair of seats, and new cushions etc in our VW van at the end of last year, reasonable price, on time, and wifey is delighted with them. Good peeps to deal with. Bri

    Thermostat

Temp guages fitted to cars are not the most accurate instruments in the world. I think I have an 82C stat in mine but indicates 75 on aftermarket guages (matched sender/guage). I wouldn't worry too much unless you are overheating. As said above, make sure you've got the best airflow you can get through the rad and have a reliable leccy fan. HTH, Brian

    More Brake Q’s

Thanks for input Gents. Bit the bullet and got the same as I have now, bit steep but makes for straightforward installation. If I went for a different type, I wasn't sure about reservior mounting or fitting to bulkhead, or the front-rear split system, so stumped up the 40 or 50 extra for piece of mind. In case anyone is worrying about me driving behind them, ordered a tigger push rod as well Thanks again, Bri

    More Brake Q’s

Just a thought. Existing M/C has three outlets- one to rear, one to front left and one to front right. If I got a M/C with 2 ports, could I take one to both fronts by teeing it? All the 2 port M/Cs I've seen have had diagonal split across brakes rather than front -rear. Are all the threaded connections the same on different sierra M/Cs? I seem to have the most expensive version of M/C but others obviously seem to get away with cheaper versions, so maybe it makes sense to change. Thanks again for input, Bri

    More Brake Q’s

The link is to a different type to the one I need. For some reason the cast body cylinders are much cheaper than the steel tube type that I have (like half the price...), especially the 2 outlet types (mine has 3 outlets). I'm after 22mm bore as well to get a bit more power with the servo off. Many thanks for trying though. Bri

    More Brake Q’s

Well, a ring around all the local places has drawn a blank. Brakes Int'l do it for about 115 delivered, genuine original. Any better options gratefully received before I bite the bullet! brian

    More Brake Q’s

Thanks for replies Gents. My local place has always been able to get things in the past, maybe I need to try some others. Very kind of you to offer to enquire Ian, I’ll throw the net a bit wider (maybe even as far as Preston!) before I put you to any trouble. I was considering the threaded rod option in case I end up with a KA M/C, in which case the Tiger rod wouldn’t be suitable. Even though I’ve no plans to use the car in the next few days, it’s horrible knowing I can’t just jump in and go! Ta again, Brian
  19. I’ve failed to find anywhere that still does seal kits for sierra master brake cylinders (I believe it is a Girling steel tube type, 22 bore, 2000cc 82-88). Anyone any suggestions for supplier? Not easy to find new either, and 100 notes... I don’t have access to a lathe, so I thought of using 8mm studding as a pedal to master cylinder push rod (with servo removed) - any comments re suitability? TIA, Brian
  20. I haven't taken the M/C off the car yet, but it looks like circlip is present. The piston springs out and then hits a stop with the end protruding by 2mm. Bri

    Brake Servo Or Not?

Having taken the servo etc apart, I reckon I need a rod that is 167mm from where the white donut meets the pedal to the end that locates in M/C. That makes my existing rod too short to modify. Anyone remember what length theirs is? What length is the Tiger rod? TIA, Bri
  22. Took the servo off earlier, and since the master cylinder (from a sierra) has been separated, it seems to have developed a drip from where the piston goes in. The piston is protruding by about 2mm from the cylinder body. There is no evidence of any leak before I did this, nothing really in the rubber gaiter anyway. Does this mean the M/C is knackered? If it is goosed I might look for a KA M/C instead of putting new seals in. TIA, Brian

    Brake Servo Or Not?

Thanks Ian, that makes perfect sense. The pedal shaft is a control input to the servo, and the servo 'amplifies' it and gives an output to the M/C. Next stop, a call to Tiger. Ta again, Brian

    Brake Servo Or Not?

Took car for a spin with servo hose disconnected and blocked up- much better than with a servo. I'll get a new pushrod, but how does having servo fitted but disconnected effect feel? Can't remember hearing any comment on that before. Bri

    Stoneleigh

Reiteration of thanks to those that organised beer/barbie/weather etc, much appreciated. Hope the lad that hit the electric box got home OK. Uneventful trip home apart from nodding off on M6 (luckily waking up before hitting anything...) Bri
