  1. The Manifold just bolts on, the ports in the head are pear shaped on the injection so a little grinding work on the manifold will help to avoid a step. Use a carb manifold gasket, a cheap one, they have a bit more material to cover the edges rather than the ford job.

  2. Hi Simon, I have a 285 with a 38 DGAS, its is fine, I think much wilder then you may start regretting. Instead of modifying your head get an injection one, it already has the valve inserts in for unleaded and flows better, then flow that if you wish. Look at the Dave Andrews site downloads for the information on head flowing and just about everything else.

  3. 2 1/2° which now gives me just over 1° -ve at rest, it stops the back end wiggling over bumps too. I have had a couple of replies for these so far thanks chaps if I can get another one I will get some made and risk selling the others.

    Regards Peter.

  4. I have had some rear camber correction wedges made for my car and can get some more produced, they will be about £25 for a pair if there are 5 people interested, cost should be less if greater nos. are needed. They are in aluminium, not as sexy a profile as Jim Stott’s or even Jim himself but work fine. Please email me if you are interested.

    Happy New Year everyone

  5. Hey there's nothing wrong with sprouts unless you overcook them, they should be slightly crunchy. I have to defend one of the few things that come out of Bedfordshire these days, no Vauxhalls, Bedfords, Commers, Frigidare, but we do have a big Amazon distribution centre. Is this progress?

  6. I have been with Flux for a few years, I got a better quote from Roadsure but Flux then just about met it throwing in the breakdown cover so I stayed with them.

Have many people ever claimed on their insurance?

  7. Firstly, dont bother with the sealed beam units if you intend to drive in the dark. There seems to be two thicknesses of flanges on headlight units and the thinner ones will rattle around. I ended up with the thinner ones but made spacer rings out of the coiled curtain wire springs without the plastic covering. they are a bit fiddly to fit but work fine.

  8. Hi Andy the DGAS has one vacuum connection for the vacuum advance on the cam side (when fitted to a pinto) of the mounting flange, there is another on the opposite side for the love diaphragm, if fitted, and mine has another one between the two chokes behind the gear quadrants. I have blanked off this one, I assume you had connected it to the dizzy connection? either of the mounting flange connections should give a good reading.

  9. Hi Andy I am not sure what you are asking. Is it that you are not getting the vacuum readings you thought you should? where abouts on the carb are you fitting it? Or is it the hesitation during the transition stage of the carb? Does your dgas have a LOVE diaphragm? (low vacuum enrichment) What cam are you running?

  10. Hi Piddy, hope you are well. just looking in the bible according to St. Haynes the Auto diff for 2l engines is 3.62 for the injection and 3.38 for the carb model as opposed to 3.92 inj and 3.62 carb. So basically it is a higher ratio than the manual, acceleration in theory would be slightly slower, but quieter cruising. I had put a gearing spreadsheet on the old website under the downloads section, if you try changing the ratios in it, the speed differences in each gear will be shown.

  11. Hello Bob, welcome to the wonderful world of Robin Hoods, my sump clearance is about 3 3/4" it is an RS alloy one and apart from some sleeping policemen has been fine. The body rides about 6 1/4" at the front and 6 1/2" at the rear. Ideally the front lower wishbone/control arm should be about horizontal. If you can move the front spring it isn't really supporting the front of the car! The standard front springs fitted on the inboard suspension were 180lbs/in with a free height of 9". check to see what the installed height of yours are. Mine were about 71/2" so about 270lbs preload. I will try to email you some pictures and article about fitting softer springs it may be of use to you, the pictures at least.

    Regards Peter.

  12. The handling is fine, it is the grip that is a bit lacking at times. It depends how wide your rear tyres are (the narrower the better) and how heavy your right foot is. Drive sensibly for the conditions and no problems, if you have plenty of space you can have a great time, and think about fitting a quick rack!

  13. Chris look down the tunnel at the propshaft, yes I know it is tricky on a Mk1 it may be easy to see from the gear stick hole. The joint at the gearbox end should be a conventional universal joint to be really safe. If you can see a hexagonal rubber doughnut or a small flywheel (vibration damper) with the doughnut bolted to it (like the one on my car!) then think about changing it. Although they were used to good effect on the Lotus Elan driveshafts and had to take axial loads as well.

ps. look at chapter 8 in the Sierra haynes book (903) lots of pictures of them there!

  14. Richard, if it was running ok before then the cam change shouldn't have made it suddenly run rich, lean perhaps. First check all the jets are clear and what sizes they are, 'Big Jim' posted a chart on here some time ago listing suggested sizes you should find it by doing a search. Turning the idle screws in leans the mixture. Assuming the jets are all ok, turn both the idle screws gently fully in then undo them about 1 1/2 turns, start the engine, adjust idling speed with the throttle stop. Then try adjusting the idle screws to increase the idle speed, adjust both screws the same amount! when you have the engine running as smoothly as possible reduce the revs using the throttle stop screw and try again. It is the same as setting any carb apart from the fact that there are two idle screws in this case.

  15. Hi Jez mine now just says "Robin Hood" for Make and "two axle rigid bodied sports" for Model/Type. Originally it said something like 3 door saloon but was a Robin Hood, oh! and the engine no. was wrong.

    Peter

  16. James, you haven't put a location in your details, but I suggest you find out where and when the local club meetings are held. Go along and see a few cars, ask questions, the owners are a friendly bunch and you may get a ride too! As for the size thing, the early Triumph based cars were smaller, narrower anyway and the Mk1 Sierra cars were too. Problem with the narrow cars is that the choice of a decent seat is limited.

    Peter.
