Thats the idea, its going to be my fun car that goes like stink.

Ever since i saw the Atom i have wanted to do something similar, so this is how i will do it.

Thanks for that link, i will definetly go for the Wilwood 4 pots, 283discs etc. Also if the mk2 escort balance bar set fits easyily enough i will get that too.

Thanks for all the info again guys, much appreciated.

does the escort system use the same mounting as the sierra one, or does it need modifying?

Where did you get yours and how much did it set you back?

thanks again for the pic

The mounting is different to the Sierra but no changes to the chassis. The Sierra one bolts to a mounting plate that is bolted to the chassis, just need a different shaped mounting plate made from a couple of small bits of plate, not diffficult.

You can get the Escort pedal boxes from numerous places, just buy a copy of classic ford mag and there's loads of adverts for MKI/II Escort bits, Rally design for one, plus there's always ebay

You may be going over the score with the brakes as the weight is only about 750kg (roughly). Why not go with the Sierra set up to start with, you can always upgrade later on.

Most of us have built up our ideas of what we want in/on our cars in the early days, be very very carfull, it is the easyist way of burrying loads of money into a car that will not get finnished or be too expensive.

I got stuck because i was getting to bogged down with the details, build the basics that don't cost you anything, get it rolling, even get it through the SVA then do the upgrades.

I know i will need new seats but the ones i have got will do for the SVA, wheels and tyres cheap for the SVA, buy the expensive ones after with time to peruse, Shocks may well do them before SVA because mine are inboard and so on.

By all means do your research, just hold back on the spend.

I agree Paul,. you can very easily get carried away with the amount of money spent on these projects.

I remember my first Lotus Seven. It had a 1500 Cortina Mk 1 GT engine and box, yet its basis was Anglia 1200cc. A wonderful classic, which had I still got it would be far more valuable than any 2B. ;)

When you consider the low resale price of a completed 2B :( the whole thing is dropped very squarely into context.

i can see what you are all saying, but i am not worried about the resale as i can can keep it for fun or just put it back to a standardised 2b.

I reall am thinking of the wilwood brakes now as if i am on the track, which i want to, standard brakes may just overheat. Wilwoods are only £350ish so what the hell.

But the balance bar set-up is for more room as well as being able to adjust trhe brakes better.

Doing the brakes the way i want should only cost me about £60 for new rear discs + pads, big wilwoods on the front ans the pedal box, so not too bad really.

I will have to wait and see what happens i guess, am looking out for a 2b for now, i can jst keep on saving money up until i find one then see hwo i feel.

Thanks for all the info and advise though guys.

cheers

Just remember if you are going to SVA it for the road, the balance bar setup will not pass. You have to get the balance set up for the road/MOT and pin the balance bar so it cannot be moved. Subsiquently if the pin fell out you would have your adjustable brake bias back again.

my front brakes on my dax are using

260mm granada 5 stud discs - granada calipers - 15 in image rims - fits well stops well - cheap to find - you can use cosworth discs on a sierra upright but will need an adapter plate to move the calipers out, the cossie discs are 273mm and fit in 15in rims.

you dont need very big brakes to stop a very light car -

look at GT race cars - very big big engines lots of inertia - require larger brakes to keep them cool,

smaller cars such as sprint cars dont generate anywhere near those temperatures because of the lack of weight - most people are running 13in rims smaller brakes - they will stop just fine.. mind you in saying that big rims skinny tyres and big brembos do look the dogs nuts B)

On the gearbox's originally brought up on this thead:

The uk spec t5's are obviously stronger than a type9, and as people have noted, can be got periodically from uk ebay. Quad4rods (http://www.quad4rods.com/Catalougue.pdf) have a bellhousing for it (which is where i got my duratec one). However, unlike my mazda based duratec, the zetec has the standard ford bellhousing bolt patten, so i don't think it should be that much of a problem.

Also, note the t5 dimensions are not that much bigger than a type9. Look thru some of my posts, and you'll find one where i list the dimensions.

Cheers, -sm

T5 ratios are much better than the type9/MT75 and its a really strong box other options are BGH GearTec or Quafe (Burton Power) gear sets then you can pick ratios to suit. The rear end is very strong but you may be on the limits, the 7 1/2 inch cosworth is a little stronger and has LSD. The ultimate (and i have seen it) is a Jag diff mated to a modified Cosworth/Sierra rear end. This combination of T5 and Jag diff ( 10 inch i think) was to be used with a 350bhp turbo Zetec in a Sierra, with the much lighter Robin Hood you probably will be OK with the Cossie diff.

My friends luego passed with a balance bar last thursday, as long as its setup i believe 65% front 35% rear and is pinned with a roll pin your ok. You can use a dummy roll pin in to the nuts, not that anyone would fool the examiner wth this of course :p
