Zetec Engine Installation

Hi All

Booked five days off work in Mid Feb to finally change the engine in my 2B, from a pinto to Zetec. (brand new pinto, well 300 miles old, was used by a college as a demo engine, when i got it last year it had never been fitted to a car.

Anyway back to the zetec, looking at spending no more than £1500 but £1000 would be nice. So can anybody help with bargain places to pick up the bits i need, i know RH do a zetec for £750+VAT (but prob 1.6 or 1.8 not the 2L i want) so scrap yard probably best place as seem to go for £350 ish, but then a rebuild is probably recommended!!

Happy to stick with standard ecu for now as these seem to be the expensive part!

I'm sure there’s lot of experience out there so i would be happy to hear the spec you think i should be able to get for £1000 - £1500 and any good links for places to get the parts from!??

Thanks for any help :D

The New engine are the 2ltr black top at 750+vat we do the ecu as well the cheapest option would be to use motorbike throttle bodys, we also have all the other parts like engine mounts and new pedal box etc

£1000 is a tight budget. Try your local scrappy for an engine. £100 in Plymouth. Don't rebuild, they do 150,000miles with no problem. 1800 flywheel, drill for pinto clutch and pressure plate and use the pinto release bearing. You already have these clutch bits. Make your own engine mounts and alternator bracket. Small alternator from micra, swift, rascal etc.

Then it gets expensive. Exhaust manifold. Ecu for sparks (megajolt. There are lots of problems getting the standard ecu to work). Fuelling you will need at least a manifold and bike carbs if on a budget.

There are other bits you have to have like plumbing, oil catch tank, mods to pedals, cam belt kit, oil, filters and other consumables that keep on adding cost.

Could be done cost wise with some effort. Five days is pushing it!

Hi Thanks for the feedback, reassured that maybe a scrap yard engine will be ok rather than forking out for a new engine.

Just reading http://www.toyne.org.uk/zetec.html link which is great!! Is the Phase 1/2 or 3 zetec easier to fit. At the moment i'm looking for phase 3 unless advised otherwise?

Trying to make a list of all the things required so i can have them all ready, so thanks longboarder for the above.

Does anybody have a drawing of the custom engine mounts need to fit the original 2B so I can make these up prior??

Thanks

Simon

I made simple mounts which consist of a plate bolted to the side of the engine, a diagonal support and a horizontal plate to bolt to the rubber mounts. (Araldite no good for sticking the metal bits together so I glued them up with the trusty mig.) The plates are as in the pic. (pic from http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/ which is an excellent resource.)

However you can do it with the pinto mounts and two bits of 6mm-10mm plate drilled for the pinto mount bolt holes and the zetec block bolt holes with bolts going east west etc.

Am i wrong in thinking that you could just buy an old mondeo with the 2l zetec engine, which could be heard running etc rather than just the engine from a scrappy. You would then have all the bits that a scrappy would charge you for alternators etc... ive seen mondeos going real cheap $100-200 territory. Other than having to get rid of the shell (steel prices are up so you may get paid for it) is there a reason not to do this???

None at all. Except the usable bit is the engine. No ancillaries will fit apart from the coil and leads and you usualy get them with the engine anyway. Alternator is huge. Starter is wrong for type 9. Inlet manifold is pants and huge. Exhaust manifold is crude cast lump.

If you don't buy one of Richards new motors, I've been running off the theory that once you have initially installed the zetec, replacing the engine isn't actually that expensive if you need to. To rebuild a blown up pinto to a really good spec is min £1k+. Zetec blown up? Pop down the scrappy for £100 - 250 and take a risk!

Thanks all, the diagrams are great, means i can make up these bits beforehand. The 5 days hopefully will mean i can get the pinto out and zetec in place.......as long as I can get it in and 80% done i'll be happy. Then spend some weekends making it run!!

If any of you hear of a good deal, 2L blacktop or any tunning parts please let me know.

Thanks

Simon

Evening All

Just trying to put together a shopping list for the installation, and have a few questions

Whats the Best alternator to fit....longboarder you suggest a few, which is the optimum choice?

Carbs - twim 40's/45's or bike, i'm presuming bike a am on a budget. Which ones are best??

Ignition - The above link has ways to make the ecu from a old escort/orion work....is this possible?? or is the extra cost for megasquirt etc.. worth it?? if so which one?

1800 zetec flywheel (from black/silver top) then use all other bits from pinto??

Starter motor from a 1.8/2.0 DOHC??

Sump - From the black top and shorten the steel bit??

Lots of questions i know, and probably a lot more to come........anyone who can add more bits i need would be very welcome!!!

Thanks for all the help, hopefully it will be up and ready so i can get to a couple of the shows this year :D

Alternator- most small japanese hatchbacks have a small alternator as in the pic below. Micra from the last 10 years or so should get one with a five rib pulley. I found a swift alternator which has a three rib pulley so I bought a six rib belt from Halfords of the right length, cut it in half (lengthways) and have a spare. Done about five thousand miles and ready for a change. You will need to make a support bracket and decide to fit on left or right of the engine. Westfield and ? Tiger can sell you one and probably other locosters.

Carbs- any off a big bike. 40mm mikuni of an R1 come with throttle pot which is useful.

Megajolt- used to be the ignition only unit for sparks and there are plenty of base maps around to get running. These days I think use the ignition in megasquirt. Not sure as I have no experience of these.

Flywheel- 1.8 zetec is much lighter than the 2L. You can use it with a 1.8 mondeo plate and pressure plate which will have the correct center spline. Use QH CT 133 release bearing in type nine fork for this. (Most 1.8 escorts used the smaller center spline). I had clutch slip problems, gave up and got an 1800 flywheel drilled by retro ford for sierra clutch and plate. No more slip! Uses standard sierra release bearing.

Starter motor- Narrow bodied DOHC starter.

Sump- Choices. Shorten a) blacktop mondeo sump (steel bit) B) 1800 CVH sump (steel) Needs a couple of holes drilling c)1800 escort sump. (Ally) All need shortened oil pickup.

You can buy a ready done sump for 200 - 400 quid if feeling lazy.

Guest yosamite sam

just doing a pinto to 1.8 to zetec conversion now - you will more than likely have to make your own engine mounts - seems that most cars are slightly different - i would wait till you get the engine hanging in the engine bay in the right place YOU want it to fit - then - find what will hold it in place.

you might get a pinto alternator to fit - i'm looking at that now - tiger cars do a zetec pulley to fit the lucas alternator as do brise - you would need a new bracket - tiger do one i bought which needs a few spacers to fit the alternator.

starter - the zetec 1.8 ring gear is closer to the engine block than the pinto so you will need a starter from a cvh maybe - check the throw of the pinnion and also the sump could foul the body

5 days??????? kidding arntcha? lol - i wish

plumbing fuel system exhaust and intake are all differnent - only bits i kept was the radiator, type 9 gearbox and battery!
