Have read some of the words of wisdom; reference diff ratios; & haven't found a match for the following tag taken from my diff (top line)83BG JD 392 (second line)4A0B1 4 1 412

I think this is a 3.92/1 diff -- can some one confirm,trying to calculate the dipcode for our electronic speedo,thanks.

I've got this on my diff...

I believe the '392' refers to a ratio of 3.92. I've actually just had the diff off and confirmed the ratio by turning it.

 

So I'd say you are correct in your assumption

Often the easiest way is to read the number written in white on the rim of the wheel inside. Give each bolt holding the backplate a wack with a hammer before trying to undo it. Breaks the steel/ally corrosion.

Thanks Nigel,but the diff. is installed & had one hell of a job (hammer,chisel,bigger hammer)getting the one torx bolt out that held the tag;which was hiding behind the rear diff, mount.
