2B Surrey Hood

Knock-on

If your Mrs has a sewing machine ---- make your own. Start off with a very cheap two man tent for all material-- ground sheet for night cover & poles -- string -- fittings -- tent material for surrey. Ours has done 3 years & speeds up to 85.

You really need to make your own or give whoever makes you one all the measurements as no 2 are the same. Also think about fitting an awning rail rather than press studs.

You could try Softbitsforseverns. If they dont have the pattern, they can start from scratch for you. Won't be cheap but the quality will be good. They made one for my Zero. Had to have the car for a day to make it.

Wife has recently made a cover for my boot (rear tub) area, it cost me £12 for material and £18 for turnbuckles (preferred these to press studs, stronger of course) I got all the materials from Ebay. With my car being a one off, the tub area is much bigger than normal (get two full size suitcases in it) so rather than box it in thought it more useful with a removable cover. The tricky part of making the cover was getting the circles (4) cut out in the correct place for the roll bar, so I would think a Surrey top would be less difficult to make. If you are going to try with a normal standard sewing machine you are likely to have the same difficulties as my wife had. The heavy duty material breaks needles on the machine on a regular basis, the air was quite "blue" as my wife lost patience time and time again (this was when hemming (double thickness) the edge's of the material) She eventually resorted to oiling the needle when on "double thickness" I would like a Surrey top myself, but dare not mention another "little job" for the car to my wife after this, she would probably hit me with something heavy enough to do permanent damage :diablo: :diablo: :diablo:

No lack of training I assure you, 20 years experience in a shoe factory sewing leather shoes all day ???, I think the difference being "the material" I used heavy duty vinyl, not cotton type tent material

I was in the doghouse when I tried using vinyl to make my surrey....broken needles everywhere.

Then I found a place that made sails & boat covers. I bought a length of UVA proof material they use for

winter boat covers. Its lighter than vinyl, 100% water & uva proof, doesn't stretch, & comes in many colours.

This one may not be any good for you, but any sailmaker nearby should be able to help.

I found this company on e-bay that sell various types of marine canvas with and without PU coatings, I have bookmarked it for when I plan to make my Surrey, link: http://stores.ebay.c...ricspecialists/

They also sell various fixings/ press studs that may be needed too.

I guess if it is good enough for a boat it should be waterproof enough for a hood!

Not sure if anyone has used them?
