Alloy Wheels

Hey guys, been looking for ages for some alloy wheels for my kit car. Currently I have a brand new set of rip speed 15" 4x108 et 38 alloy wheels but to be honest I'm not 100% keen on them. Has anyone got any recommendations? Want to keep the same size, just want to find something that little bit special and will finish my car off a treat.

I have been looking at either black pro race 1.2, compomotive wheels, or speedlines. Been trying to find a decent set of used ones at a decent price. Hard to find though!

If your car is Searra based, the offset is quite variable. I am on et 15 with 15" rim size @ 6.5 j. I am toying with the idea of fitting wider rims, on the back 8j will easily fit keeping the et 15. If I use 9j on the rear, they will not only fit but at et 15 they will still be central in the wheel arch and fill it. Just take care then with tyre size. 235 will be ok but anything over and you might start rubbing on your suspension and outer lip of your wheel arch. Front max with standard wings would be around 7.5j and 205 tyres. These figures are only a guide as to a standard fitting without the use of spacers or wing alterations.

You might need to be careful with wider tyres as these cars are light and wide tyres might produce some unexpected results.

I'm no expert but just raising some questions (which i'd also like to know the answers too)

Eg with wide tyres will you find yourself aquaplaning?

You'll have heavier steering if you go wide on the front

You'll prob understeer first with wide back tyres (this is prob preferable and the reason MR2's have different front to back) but is this the best?

Will you actually get any improvement other than looks? Caterhams don't run particularly wide tyres

personally like Black 7/8 spokes...which is why i fitted them to my car :) but depends on your colour scheme too. Mine is bright yellow so black works well.

Shame you're so far away - I've been trying to give away a set of 15" alloys that were on my last Sierra. I've also got a rough set of 14" Speedlines that were on my 4x4 when I got it - sort of a starfish look.

When I still had my 2B I was running it on Capri wheels. RWD Escorts and the Capri and Cortina (plus others no doubt) ran a different offset to the Sierra which pushed their wheels further out but they have the same PCD and centre bore size so they are a straight swap.

Peugeot cars have the same offset as the earlier RWD Fords but a larger centre bore and a different angle on the seat for the nuts so they are a relatively easy fit but should really have a spigot ring and proper wheel nuts fitted. You might find something that suits from their range and in the recent-ish crop this also means that a lot of the Citroen stuff could be yoinked and put on a Ford so don't discount Saxos and the like if there is something that looks right.

As for Midland Wheels - I've heard a LOT of rather different accounts of the quality of their products from the Mini crew. The general consensus there is that the wheels are OK but the paint/laquer will be peeling/flaking within 12 months so budget for a repaint/powder-coat in the price of any wheels you buy from them.
