Anyone Know Where To Get A Throttle Potentiometer

Hi All,

does anyone know where I can get a Throttle Potentiometer for a 1989 Ford Sierra Ghia 1, 2 litre PINTO injection engine.

The part has these numbers on it :- 85 TF 9B 989 AB

Any ideas would be useful as the car will not run :help: now this item has failed, is it possible to replace it with something else ?

The Car is not mine but I have said I would help out and hence the notes above.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Cheers :drinks:

I would be wary of finding one from another car and making it fit, the ecu will be expecting too see values from the throttle pot within a specific range, if you buy a different one you need to make sure the resistance values are the same,

Thanks Stephen it is a PINTO I have amended the original quote I will speak to my friend to see if he can give further detail and will put a PM to you if we / he would like further assistance from you.

Thank YOU again

Kindest regards

That's not entirely critical.

With the three pins on the potentiometer, the wiper is tapping off a voltage which the ECU will be reading, not a current. So a 5k ohm or 10k ohm pot will do the same job. You don't want it too low (which will draw too much current from the supply) or too high (noise on the signal will become dominant) but I think anything from 5k to 20k would be fine. It does depend in the input impedance of the ECU though which is not normally known.

This might be helpful either now or in the future... Page 3 shows the tech spec of all the sensors.

I bought a TPS from ebay but that was a few years ago.
Think this might be the one you are looking for...

A pinto injection system tps is the same as the DOHC. And the resistance values match too.

Actually, no, it only show the expected voltages that you should see.

It doesn't tell me what the actual resistance value of the pot should be. A potentiometer is commonly used as a voltage divider which produces a value between the supply (in this case 5 volts) and ground (0 volts). So the values listed are what you expect, but a pot of 5k or 50k would produce the same effect.

What matters is, is the pot "stiff" enough compared to the input impedance of the ECU? and also not too low to draw excessive current.

Tricky subject this electrickery ... :)

Steve, i suspect your tps is not at fault. Disconnect it, and try to start the car. A pinto efi with a tps disconnected will still run.

Download the injection troubleshooter from nw.rhocar.org (or search my post history) to try and find the fault.

What are your symptoms? I hav spent many hours fault finding the pinto efi!

Hi as I said in the initial post this is not my car I am asking for a friend who is at present very busy ( as are we all , never retire you have no spare time at all ) I will point out your information for him and we will seek further advice if we do not sort the problem ) Thank YOU so much for your kind assistance so far which is appreciated.

Regards

Steve, here's details of a readily-available Colvern style throttle pot - you could check dimensions, spindle pattern and rotation with the one on the engine :-

http://www.jenvey.co.uk/images/stories/virtuemart/product/tp1%20jenvey%20data%20sheet.pdf

Whether it's the right spread of resistance over the correct angle for the Ford, I obviously don't know, that would need checking. On aftermarket ECUs you set the pot extremities in software, but on a standard Ford ECU I've no idea if that can be done or it has to be "as per factory"... does anyone know what the management is on that car (Bosch, etc)...? Chances are the pot is common across a variety of models and manufacturers?

Hi Everyone,

Hope I have got the correct place to say we have now found a replacement a brand new unit has been sourced thanks to Jez who found us a company in Wymondham Norfolk who specialise in Throttle Bodies. The replacement was purchased at a cost of £55.00 + Vat.

So Thank YOU ALL Again.

Not fitted yet but will update later when it is finalised.

Thank YOU :drinks:
