Once you get to it a spanner (could be alan or torques) on the centre of the tension pulley and turn anti clockwise to release tension on the belt. But first draw a plan of how the belt is fitted (serpentine belts take some devious routes) you will find it easier if you have a helper.

Why is it not possible to slacken the alternator mount off & fit by hand?

Bob the alternator is not adjustable on the Focus/C-Max

Never needed a tool to change the belt you can either move tension pulley as Sir Chris said or just remove the alternator from the engine and fit the

new belt to the rest of the pulleys and just fight the alternator back in to place.

There is no tensioner. The belts are elastic and require a tool on the water pump pulley to stretch the belt over, and a second tool on the crank pulley to stop the belt sliding across at thr same time. Took me an hour to get the belt on last time with a home made tool, which caused minor damage to the belt. Looking to do it properly this time

Here is a tool:http://www.lasertools.co.uk/product/5919

I'm pretty sure that if you buy a kit from Ford you get the tool included. My brothers alternator belt snapped on his cmax outside Ford a couple of years ago he popped in and brought one as was there. A quick look on flea bay and you could get a kit with a tool for £36.

A pulley feeder can be made from any old Tupperware kind of material and the lever tool can be got over.

It wouldn't have a lock possition on it but can still be done with care.
