Hi all,

Got the chance of a tvr chimaera, anybody know much about them? Are they reliable, it's got a 4 litre v8 in it and certainly looks good. Just don't know if it will be as much fun as the Westfield.

Cheers Mark

Flaming predictive text, the title was supposed to be TVR Chimaera

all i've ever heard about tvrs is that they are unreliable. But i don't actually have any evidence to back that up. I would imagine they are relatively simple though to fix if you have been around kit-cars.

they are pretty nice looking cars though.

can't be any more unreliable than a kitcar can they :)

Edd China did one on there Wheeler Dealers show.

The ladder chassis had to be replaced.

They said on the show the plastic coated chassis was a common fault.

They also pointed out it usually rotted first between the body and chassis where it could not be seen.

Take somebody with you that is not anxious to buy one.

As the old saying goes, "love is blind" or it can be.

Better still the AA or RAC inspectors have a guide for inherent faults on different cars.

Not an expensive service if it saves you wasting loads of money on repairs.

check the chassis...All of it... very carefully.

electrics can be problematic due to limited earthing points (fibreglass body)

check the tvr forums for a buying guide.

the chimera is one of the more liveable ones daily

they can be great cars if you find a good one.

I'm going to have to get it up onto a car lift aren't I, it's the only way to get a good look, I may at times be a bit of an impulse buyer but with this sort of money I need to be sure though the lad that's selling it said the chassis has recently been thoroughly checked out and painted.

Can't paint between the chassis and body Mark.

That's the big problem.

Might be able to squirt waxol between them at high pressure, not sure.

One of the old long nozzle oil spray guns would probably do it at full compressor pressure.

Definately no prep could be done.

Hope it's all good for you Mark, I would love one of those myself.

Make sure you check this car very very carefully. Get a good one and they're OK...get a bad one and I hope you've money to burn! I would never put you on a downer but just be sure you check the brakes the chassis and the electrics! Good luck, I hope she's a good un.
