You need a VIN number which DVLA can supply.

If the car is finished you need to get it through the IVA test, again apply via the DVLA (IIRC)

If its not finished, there is nothing you need to do. Keep the V5 from the donor if possible,

so you get an age related plate, otherwise just settle for a Q plate.

This may help...

With either IVA or DVLA, they require to see amount of work put in, so photographs are extremely important to show stages of build and major components, the more the better. All serial numbers are also good to list and photos to prove whats used, especially needed to get the magic age related registration.

IVA are keen to know who built the kit so if possible go for self-build category and if necessary strip down what is already done to show your compliance, it's a good thing to do anyway for peace of mind and learning about your motor 8). If not you have to declare who built the vehicle for you, which opens up more complications.

If having to do IVA follow the gov guides and all the advice offered through RHOCaR which is great.

When applying for IVA you have to prove it was an amateur build, which is why you need photos. However, you can apply for an IVA without this proof and still get the car on the road. It changes some of what you have to comply with at the test but worth familiarising yourself with the manual and learning what extra may need to be done, it could be easier than rebuilding enough to prove the amateur built status of the car.
