Hi all, I know this has been done before many of times but has anybody found the best option for fitting a alternator and turning the water pump the correct rotation?

Im looking into buying the GBS kit but are there any other brainwaves for a tighter budget!?

Cheers all!

There's lots of good stuff on this site. When I done the conversion I used parts from RetroFord like the idler puller and alternator brackets. You will have to get a very small alternator most people use a  denso used on Nissan/Diahatsu cars. Other suppliers include Burton, if you have spare time you make all the brackets out of steel plate.

To add to the above with the escort and mondeo zetec belts, they have different belt runs. The pump is turned clockwise in the escort/fiesta 1.8 and 1.6 , the mondeo pumps 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 (or maybe just the 2.0) are turned anticlockwise. For a simple run without idlers an escort pump works fine.  Belt run can then be as below, a simple triangle. All the pumps bolt up to all the blacktop zetecs. The obvious visible difference between the two pumps is the straight exit pipe you want. The pump you have has an angled exit pipe.

Pumps are 30 quid on ebay.

Sorry guys I've been away for a week in the caravan! Back to work now! 😞 i really appreciate the input it's for the 2b im converting not the GBS I think im going to get the engine in and mounted then work over problems like this as I go! I have alot to think of and it's a rolling project for funds .... I will deffiently look into the 1.6 pump although im thinking If I mount the alternator on the o/s then I would have to purchase a ribbed pulley 🤔

Escort/fiesta 1.6 pump. Not Mondeo 1.6 pump.

My later solution (I first had a silvertop, then a blacktop then another silvertop and lastly a ST170) was to make up a three leg pedestal holding a V groove pulley and run the mondeo pump off the back of the belt. There are handy bolts or holes to mount it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok it’s really easy for the alternator I may even have the brackets in my garage retro ford sell them and you can then use the pinto alternator still unless you use the gbs inlet plenum then you have to use there brackets I’ve done all of this on my 2B
