Nigel it may sound daft but I have known the timing belt to slip a few teeth not enough to do any damage (actually I think the 1200 is a safe engine) that does exactly as you describe it doesn’t take long to check. Also check the idler and tensioner as the plastic part brakes up leaving the belt very loose and anyway I'd be changing the belt at 55k anyway (use a belt kit comes complete with pullies)

We have a 1.4 8v corsa on a 93 L, and had similar problems, with a little pinking under moderate load, and the occasional misfire. I don't recall what we did to fix it, but i can find out. I wont be online untill maybe late on the 1st or on the 2nd, so you'll have to wait a day or so to find out!

I know exactly what the problem is, its a corsa 1.2.

I suggest taking it for a long drive off a short pier. A mate of mine works in a Vauxhall dealers and all he works on is 1.2's, oh and Frontera's, obviously.

No news. Can't fix it. Checked everything suggested short of replacing the injector and no change. So she wanted to take it back to Oxford after Christmas where it still is, puttering patheticaly along in its usual gutless way. Last saw her three days ago and no better/no worse. I'm off to Oz on monday for three months to soak up some sun and catch a few waves so she will just have to live with it. If it gets worse she can take it to a garage or I will give her Petemate's address and he can assemble a rescue posse!

I'll do my best to put up with it. Driving a V8 ute to the beach should compensate a bit. Brother in law has a nice yellow(?) Ducatti which may help. Talking to my sister today she says the forecast is for clear skies and 39C for my arrival and the next three months, so thats OK then!

The zetec engine is putting down roots into the patio! One day.

To me it sounds like a coil problem.

under light load they can produce a spark good enough to ignite the fuel.

when u open the throttle the fuel can effectively quench the (already weak) spark and it then misfires

I would try substituting a known good coil ( i.e. borrow one to test this ! )
