Pinto Head Identification

Hi, just got a new pinto engine, no engine number as it was donated to a college, but the marking by the number 4 plug is a definate I, not L.

I realise this is not a usual unleaded marking, but by any chance does it mean inserts???

Thanks

Simon

Old thread resurrection

Is there a definitive answer to this question?

I have a spare head stamped as ‘I’ next to the number 4 plug.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sean

'I' OR 'L' stamped next to number 4 spark plug hole= a leaded head most likely to be 1979 - 1982 in age

It's not an injection head with round ports as there isn’t room for the injectors. All injection heads have egg shaped ports. There were lots of 205 blocks with carb heads I believe all were for leaded fuel.

oh poo been running on unleaded for the last 3 years

but it has run ok

bit of old folklore about constant hammering of valves running on leaded actually hardens the seats

hope this is the case

A lot depends on mileage and how hard you hammer it! If you're cruising round, not doing a high mileage and have "got" away with it for 3 years forget about it. Worst that can happen is the the exhaust valve seat recess into head and you have to find/buy another. But with specialists charging whatever they can think of for inserts probably still cheaper to scrap the odd head.
