Just a thought Robbie, is your tank nice and clean inside? sometimes people have a lot of silicon sealer rolling around in the tank as a result of trying to seal it. This can block the feed pipe, when it is no longer sucking, the crap moves away allowing more fuel to get through until the next lump blocks it off again. Then again perhaps you have gone through this.

Robin, that is exactly what you need, if you do a search on here you will find lots of info to that effect. Just make sure you have the right type of cap on the rad.

Tim the only radiator hose which would be fuel proof will be fluorosilicone, the standard stuff is usually made from epdm which definately isn't.

Reminds me of all the wonderful ones that Chris A used to do for the magazine, in the old, pre pc. (in more ways than one) days. Perhaps he could issue a collection of them?

OK Jim I'll try to defend this a bit, this is a standard rad with a temperature sensor in the bottom, (Fiat 127) fine aluminium finned, copper tubes. By making sure the temperature of the water returning to the engine is reasonably cool you are providing a temperature gradient to allow the engine to cool. If you are worried about overcooling, (not much fear in a Hood I think) water flow will be controlled by the thermostat anyway, which is sensing the temperature of the water coming from the engine. I had a problem with a different car where the sensor was high up in the system and when the coolant level dropped due to it boiling, the sensor no longer thought that it was hot!

I bought mine from a rad specialist with the radiator, it fits in the bottom of the rad and switches on at 78°. The man said that the problem often with a high temp switch was that by the time the fan came on it was almost too late. The previous one I had was about 90°. It has been fine but ocaisionally on a very hot day when driving on a motor way the fan runs all the time!

Fitting an anti-roll bar to the rear only, will tend to make it oversteer. With all the different types of suspension fitted to Hoods, what works for one model will not necessarily work for another.

The cam shouldn't make any difference unless it is miles out of timing. If the engine runs ok without it connected and the vacuum tube blocked then leave it like that and you will get good mpg! but you may find that the pick up from idle is poor. If you are sure the diaphragm is not damaged, check there is not a hole in the tube anywhere causing the diaphragm to flutter and pump continually. You could try increasing the tick over a bit as it might be convinced the engine is going to stall so it pumps fuel in. The extra gubbins under the carb that Jim advised to delicately remove is a temperature sensitive switch so that it only works when the engine is cold.

Sounds like you may need a new diaphragm in the unit. The vacuum at idle should hold the diaphragm against a spring, when the vacuum 'decays' ie. when the throttle is opened, the spring closes the diaphragm and pumps fuel into the carb. So either the diaphragm is leaking or possibly there are airleaks on the inlet manifold.

Air can still get trapped in the ford pressure valve thing and lets fluid through. The pressure bleeding devices can get rid of the air as they flow a lot of fluid through. I and many others have spent hours bleeding these things. If you have the smaller 1600 drums on the back I am sure you will get away without the inertia valve.

The Cortina based hood that didn't turn up at Kimbolton has about 2" gap between tub and inside wheel 185/60 tyres. (Mike Montegue!) I have asked the owner of another for the same info but no reply yet.

Mike I dont think there is anything to tweak in the speedo they just work on the number of turns the cable does, you will need a little gearbox to change the speed of the cable. Do they check the speedo on the test? they don't here on the MOT just record the mileage. If all else fails you could fit a bike speedo, I have one on mine, works fine up to about 60, records all sorts of things and costs about £10.

Sorry Steve didn't see the oil bit that won't help a leaky valve. As others have said try to find another engine, preferably an injection one as it will have hardened valve seats and just bolt your carbs on. I have about 1" clearance between my 195x70x14 on ford wheels tyres and the rear body. Are you using the standard ford wheels with 38?mm offset or something else. Just realised you have a cortina based car, mine is sierra. I may see a cortina one tomorrow at Kimbolton, will try to measure it.

Steve it might not be the bores at all, just a valve leaking. Take the head off and have a look.
