Found confirmation from eBay that the 2.3 head is indeed a different casting:-

Notice the extra Cam bearing tower........

Still not been able to work out if the exhaust port shape/spacing is the same though?.........

Scotmac might know... he looked into a lot of different options for his lightweight. I think he's quiet cause he's off racing his fiero but it could be worth a PM.

Hey Dan, let me know if you need any local (US) gopher work done. I probably can't offer courier back to UK, like Dan (Salt) might be able to, but i can check on things and ship for ya.

Sorry, didn't look into the pinto much, since i was more interested in a cheap modern engine, that would put out a buttload of HP, but would be easy to replace...and the duratec 2.0l fit the bill. Yes, it's cheap for us in the US: 500$US.

However, i believe the Pinto engines, including US 2.3, were all the same exhaust port spacing. I looked around, and the below site and wiki appear to confirm it.

Good EAO/OHC/Lima engine info: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/arc...ex.php/t-9.html

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pinto_engine

I know you have your head wrapped around this turbo project, and that is fine...whatever rocks your boat. However, i agree w/ Dan. The zetec will give as good of HP w/out the turbo. Put some cool ITB's on it, like Nigel just picked up, and it will give you ~180hp and will look the part!

Cheers Scott, that's good to know :)

I appreciate what everyone is saying about Zetecs, Duratecs etc, but I'm hoping this will be a considerably cheaper method, plus I like the idea of being able to do it without having to move my exhaust to the other side, do something with the hole in my bonnet where the Pinto plenum pokes through, and all the other fiddly bit associated with changing to a different base engine configuration...........

So part laziness and part stubborness! :p That and I've never played with Turbo's before, so it should be a fun learning excersise!

A rusty 'n' crusty Ford e6 turbo manifold is on it's way to Salty.....................

So we should know soon whether or not it fits (or can be made to fit!) a UK 2.0 pinto :)

I wouldn't hold your breath, I think it's going to have to make BIG horses to convince the twink brigade! ;)

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to this project! :)

On a related note, I think I'm going to have to change the pedal box to make some room for the turbo, has anyone used a MkII Escort pedal-box in a 2B??

Well it's here.... & you weren't joking about the rust! One of the studs is missing too it seem.

Will try to post pics & measurements at the earliest opportunity (if missus doesn't steal camera for her New York trip!)

Bolt holes 68mm outside to outside with a 12.7 (1/2") hole diameter.

Ports 35mm diameter

Port spacing 140 - 141mm outside to outside

All measurements taken with Mitutoyo vernier caliper so pretty accurate. More general info can be seen in the pics. Can email originals if required.

Let me know any other measurements you want taken. Looks like there won't be a lot of space between Turbo & the side of the car....

Dan :)

Good work Salty! :)

Missing stud shouldn't be a problem, but I had thought there might be a clearance issue between the turbo & the side of the car (thought maybe if I ignored it then it might go away!)

I'll measure up the Pinto head for port spacing tonight...........

How wide is the manifold roughly? (from exhaust flange to turbo flange), should give me an idea if there's any chance of squezzing a turbo in.....

That's pretty different looking. Brit pinto has rectangular ports and the bolts are more vertical. Not to say the head can't be redrilled for different stud positions and the ports in manifold and head fettled to matching ovals if the tract spacing is close! Four inches between ports and an extra cam bearing support suggests the head is a good bit longer and as it's a 2.3 I would imagine the extra capacity is in wider bores making the bores centres wider apart too.

Had a look at a stock Pinto manifold and Nige has correctly spotted that the port shapes are different! <_<

If the turbo manifold can't be fettled to suit a UK engine, plan B is to attempt to cut'n'shut it with a stock Pinto jobbie

Plan C is a custom manifold, or hope a Turbo Technics (or similar) appears at a decent price. Both those options sound expensive though!.........
