Front Spring Rate On A 2b

Recommended Posts

whats the general concensus of opinion as to what spring rate i should order ?

front suspension (pillar to wishbone conversion) is near enough complete except for the springs

Hi Dave,

I did the conversion and started with 300lb springs which proved to be too soft (sump on floor), so as recommended above went for 350lbs (2 litre pinto) and theyre fine.

Thanks

Keith

It really all depends on your suspension geometry as there is no definitive answer.

I think that Dave from Dampertech recommends 300lb all round but may be wrong. It was a long time since I spoke with him.

What is critical is to get them set up right. It's a bit like tuning an engine. The most cost effective, simple and best thing to do is to get the manifolds and block matched and get all tuned and working properly on a RR session.

The same is true with suspension. You can have the wrong configuration and make it work but it's always best to get the basics correct with some expert input.

As Robin Hoods tend to vary between specific models, let alone between different models or even converted suspension from Pillar, there is no "one size fits all" answer.

Personally, I am starting with a converted sliding pillar to double wishbones but mine are different from every Robin Hood out there because we took the decision that we were not going to mount on the top chassis. I have started off with 300lb but will not know till I get it out on track whether this is correct or needs changing. I'm also running a Zetec which is slightly lighter.

If you have a standard (ish) configuration, then go with what you have to a suspension specialist and see what they come up with. If you haven't got anything yet then 325lb isn't a bad place to start.

After I converted ours, Dave at Dampertech sold me 300lb 13"

When I fitted them they were coil-bound to get the sump off the floor.

Dave changed them FOC (including postage) for 350lb ones and they have been fine since.

It depends where the bottom of the damper fits too.

As you can see in the pics, the RH version sits much nearer the body than most others, increasing the leverage from the wheel. Thats also why we have seen a few bent lower RH wishbones in the past.

My JIGTEC version has the damper right next to the hub & all I needed was 300 lb springs, but I also run an XE engine which is lighter than the Pinto. So somewhere between 300 & 350 if thats any help...

Probably a similar configuration to me Bob. I'm running Caterham wishbones which is much more suitable IMHO.

These aren't mine but similar.

Because of the angle of the suspension unit and wider mounting point, a lighter spring is preferable.
