All you need to test the alternator is a simple and cheap multimeter. Run the engine. Switch on the multimeter and set it on 20 volts. Attach the testing leads, positive to battery pos and neg to battery negative terminals and read off the volts. Handy if you can rev the engine to 2000 - 3000rpm and switching on the lights shouldn't make any difference. Voltage definitely should not go above 15v at any revs or state. (You will see different figures quoted for what the normal output range should be. I use 13.9 to 14.5.)

Now you know if the voltage regulator is OK or not.

Depends what alternator you have. Very old lucas can have a blown surge protection diode. Otherwise it's probably the rectifier going down. If it is the rectifier the ign light sometimes gets brighter if you rev up and dimmer if you put some load on like the headlights and the wipers.

Sounds like a trip to the scrapyard to get a nice little charade or swift alternator as a replacement.

alternator is kickng 13.5/14 volts the green wire which sends a signal to the red light on dash is kicking out 18 volts so i think the rectifier is on its way out so shall get pric on having it recon and price for a second hand one i think

Hi Stuart,

Looks a nice tidy job. 8)

As Chris has pointed out though might be worth adding a couple of strengthening fillets (small triangular plates) fitted to the curved brace and each upright. You'll be surprised what stress and continual flexing will do to them. I had mine go on the 2B, but have also seen them crack on other cars as well. Better to do now than walking back up the road searching the hedgerows for your escaped cycle wing :db:
