Is It Head Gasket?

I would suggest you check both the head and block faces for flatness or at least the head face. Not too easy to do unless you have an engineers straight edge. My old tuned pinto used to pressurise the coolant when it got very hot and was driven fast. A new head gasket and careful reassembly didn't cure it. Stripped it again and couldn't detect a warp but the local machine shop did. They skimmed it just enough to level it off. Problem solved.

It's a chain not a belt you will need a new chain tentioner.

Have a look on less Welsh er Web site he managed to re use the original one.

I have pm Les as cant get on his website to get info.

as I have a full MLS gasket & seal set, new hydraulic tappets, valve stem seals (all bought cheap incase they were needed)

i might as well have a go & do the lot.

will I need any special tools or equipment, Can I do anything with camshaft & valves (ie checking, cleaning)??

-its a Ford DOHC 2.0l 8v

With head off and upside down put some fluid in the chambers and see if fluid leaks out of the ports, if so valves will need lapping in.

just googled valve lapping-should be able to manage that

You can buy ocalating valve lapping tool but I use a battery power drill on the stem end and flick between clockwise & anticlockwise

Clean thoroughly all the paste off

May as well do stem seals while your at it

Not to replace the valve stem oilseals is not an option if you have the head in bits 5mins work saves lots of hair pulling and head banging mowerman

Valve spring compressor and a magnet onna stick for the valve collets.

 

That should be sufficient. Make sure that the valves go back in the same location they came from.

 

You may need valve cutting compound if you want to re lap the valves.

Also when replacing the stem seals. Replace with CVH top hat ones. They will never pop out like the pinto ones.

They will fit my Injection head with FR32 and single spirings but may not fit the RL31 double springs

It would be worth checking if the valve springs get coil bound on full lift (probably not with standard springs) worth checking if you have a higher lift cam

Seems we have all foul of the word assumption, me included.

The engine in repair is a DOHC Sierra and not a Pinto.

 

So all the advice about cam belts, injection heads are not helping. Dho.

It just seemed to slip naturally from DOHC to Pinto lol

I have taken the cylinder head off today & found the gasket between cylinder 2 and water channel perished.

the head gasket fitted was the fibre type which ford upgraded to MLS type in later DOHC engines.

also the long timing chain guide is broken.

New parts ordered so should get them next week.

 

I have checked the cylinder bores and found no damage they are all smooth except round the top where there is a ring of carbon also the piston tops have carbon on,

what can I use to clean the carbon off??

 

I will be checking valves etc in next few days
