I'm running a 2.0 ltr Dohc efi engine Tmd goes up to 110 120 is that normal

no should be between 85 and 95 so look for average of 90

I doubt you are getting a genuine 120. Your engine would be boiling even with the pressure cap on. So what are you measuring the temp with. Gauge and sender must be correctly matched. IE if the gauge came out of a pinto engined sierra it needs a pinto sender even if you have fitted a DOHC.

Even better is to use an accurate thermometer such as hand held infra-red to measure the engine temp. Then you will know fairly accurately what it is and can see if you genuinely have a problem.

Have you a voltage regulator fitted?

most smiths guages expect a constant 8V feed, this gets round the problem of guage moving as battery charges and lights etc sewitched on and off.

I took the thermostat out last night and it's not opening and closing like it should so I'm hoping its that !
