Emerald Rolling Road Tuning

Just booked my super spec in for a first tune with a chap at a place called John Sleath race cars near Doncaster.

He seemed really nice and very knowledgable over the phone.

This is the second time I tried to have it tuned.

The first time I was told by the tuner that there was a problem with the communication with the ecu and charged me £190.

Took ecu off and sent back to Emerald who couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I also had it on test for about 3 hours with no problem.

Anyway I've decided to try John Sleath instead of the original tuner and I just wondered if anyone has had any dealings with him or heard anything about him.

I looked on the internet and the few reviews I've found sound really good.

He's also listed on the Emerald web site as being a dealer.

If the ecu has a coms fault it only needed to be reset on the drop down menu, ie told to use a different one, any RR specialist would know this. You should be happy they didnt touch your engine. £190 wasted or £190 to have a saved engine. However you want to see it.

Hope the other guys work thier magic.

Top marks for John Sleath. He wont Bull***t you at all.

He has built some, & tuned many, of the Street Eliminator cars on the drag scene, including Rays.

That was old school technology ie blower & twin carbs, & John knew his stuff there.

I have no experience of him tuning Emerald software, but if he says he can do it, he can.

Nice guy, just ignore the agricultural look of everything there! It's on a farm......

Was he using the right usb to serial adaptor, the emerald requires the CTS line to be active to program, although you can read the ECU information and do some live adjustments, you will have problems writing to the ECU without it, and many of the USB to serial adaptors do not have it.

A computer fitted with a serial port is best, but the adaptor sold by Emerald has always worked for me. Careful of the connection cable though, because it can get damaged internally.

When it says comms port failure there is a drop down menu. When you select it, it then drops down other options. I think standard is no2. Just select the other. Simples, even i can do this and im a full on pc braindead retard. So if a RR cant do this id RUN. honestly if they cant solve that id be bricking it letting them loose on mine

Thanks for the replays

The first place I took the car didn't fill me with confidence even though it's a we'll know place

Like I said, I left my lap plugged i.in for a couple of hours no problem

I used the he adaptor from emerald

They were not a fan of emerald and got the felling they wanted me to change it for one they supply

Think I've made the right move

I've heard mixed reviews on John Sleath, he has done so great drag cars but he's also (I'm told) made a mess of a couple.

A safe fast road tune with decent AFR's should be fine with him though

  • 2 weeks later...

Picked the car up yesterday from john Sleath.

He had trouble with the boost control valve which was not working.

He done 2 maps and told me to return once on the road and he do a power map on full boost.

I've got a "emissions" map and a low boost map

The low boost gives about 160 bhp and runs perfectly

Should be looking at 230-250 on full boost

Really happy with the results
